zx9r knocking noise when idle?

Sat Apr 18, 2009 8:51 pm

Hey Guys,

It's a 2000 Model zx9r with full yoshi system and has also been rejetted. 14.8k km's on the clock. Bike is well taken care of and had a major service in May last year (when i got it). I have noticed (pretty much since getting the bike) that there seems to be a "knocking" noise at idle. Sounds possible like a belt of some sort, but not in the usual way i would expect (ie. not a squealing / slipping noise).

I was just wondering if i should be concerned about it? Only bike i can compare it to is my wife's zx6r of similar vintage which makes no such noise.

Currently blown most of our savings on getting the wife's bike all sorted so likely wont be able to do much in the way of taking it to a mechanic for a month or so. Just want to know whether this is a problem which means i should stop riding the bike immediately, or whether there was anything i could check about it?

Sounds to me like a clutch knock (rattle) when was the last time it had it's carbs balanced ???? engine knocks can be made worse from the fact that your carbs ain't sinked............ Turn your idle up a bit and see if the noise starts to go away.

Hey thanks for the response. Carbs were done when the bike had its major service. Will try bumping up the idle and see how i go. I did recently drop it down after i realised that when the bike got hot (around 100 degrees) it was idling at about 1,5000rpm which is higher than its meant to - i think.

Yeah that's a bit high :D
Idle is good anywhere between 1000-1500rpm I think, mine was always around 1300 from memory.

Could it be the cam chain is loose (tensioner not working), incorrect idle may also affect this :?
