Slip Slidin Away .... ZX7R

Postby Kwakka Kilt » Mon Mar 23, 2009 8:38 pm

Heyo 8)

Well, It's been a while since I was on this forum !!

I sold my old ZXR250 after rebuilding it, bought a smash repair Hyosung GT650, had good fun modding that, good bikes actually post 2006 (Black frame models)

I just swapped it for a 1996 ZX7R, which has 39,000kms on the clocks - It's a sleeper in Black.

What can I say, except this My Fav Ninja since the early 90's when I was a young laddie - I saw (Heard first !!), a ZXR750 (The Hoover pipe for air intakes model) coming over the crest of the hill I was walking up.

He had given it the full burn down the road, and was coming over the hill on a closed throttle from high revs, man it was crackling and popping itself stupid on the overrun .....

The hair on my neck stood up, and from that moment forward, I knew I had to own a bike one day, and maybe even own a Ninja 750 if things went my way.

That was 19 years ago !! Shocked

I still think they are one of the most sharp looking bikes around, even today, I want to do quite a few mods to mine, including paint, here's a pic of how I got it:

Anyway, the Ninja is tight, still tracks very true, you can tell straight away that the suspension is very planted at the front, the motor is very turbine like, no rattles, no smoke.

The ergonomics actually were very good for me on the 7R, I am quite short, so it's an easier fit for me :D

The only question I have about the bike, is clutch slipage......

Hard launches in 1st, then hard in 2nd, no clutch slip - If then pin the throttle after changing into 3rd, it slips like a bastard until the speed matches the revs, say around 8000rpm.

I can then rev out in 3rd, select 4th and pin it, no slip ......

Reckon if I fitted 3 heavier clutch springs out of the 6 in the basket it would perform better, or are my plates on the way out ?

Thx !

Kilt.

Nice bike, and yep I agree the zx7r still stands up in the looks department today..

With the clutch, try scuffing up the metal plates as they may be glazed.
Heavier duty clutch springs is always a good idea if your gunna ride it hard.

Grab some verniers and check the thickness of the plates and length of springs to see what needs replacing.

Hey MadKaw.

Cheers for the advice, will give it a go, it seems I have a bigger problem now though .....

The bike has started jumping out of second gear, did'nt do it on the bloody test run before I swapped bikes ..... Ah well.

I don't suppsoe in your racing circle of Kawa guys if they have a spare gear cluster, or maybe even just the 2nd gear dog gear and shift forks !!??

Plleeeaase !!

Bugger, the missus is going to have a field day ....

Thx again.

OK, I now have a shift drum, shift forks and other parts coming my way from EBay.

I also have a place in AUS where I can get hold of 2nd and 3rd gear cogs with healthy dogs on them, for $50 a pop !!

Beauty - I reckon I may buy a couple of extras, so I can rebuild a couple of times for that price ...... 8)

Hey Disco, ZX7Rboy :D

Cheers !

You would'nt want the fairings right now, there are a few cracks, no road rash but age related stuff.....

I am going to do a paint job soon anyway, as soon as I do the clutch and possible gearbox repair .... :(

But yup, I still love this bike !!

LOL, I'm going to have to check the threads on the forum to see how many ZX7R's are still alive and running in Oz, especially Sydney !!

I have not seen 1 other yet in the 2 weeks of daily commuting .....
