ZX6

Sun Feb 22, 2009 1:23 pm

Hi all,

Just picked up my 6 yesterday. I'll keep the road gear just in case, but it will be used primarily as a track bike.

It's pretty rough and is going to take a bit of work, but I'm booked into EC on the 29th of March so that will give me enough motivation to make it all happen.

To have it ready for EC next month I'll need...

Brake pads.
All new fluids.
All new filters.
Clean fuel tank (has rust inside)
Tyres (slicks)
Valve clearances.
New pipe.
Tuned and jetted for new pipe and air filter.
Complete suspension overhaul, rear shock rebuild, reconditioned front end.
And just a good clean, as its pretty filthy.
I'll probably get away with the current chain and sprockets for a while but they will need to be changed soon as well.

That should keep me busy for the next 34 days. :kuda:

Cheers,
Mike.

EDIT: here it is

So the 600 finally made it to the track. 8) Ran at Wakefield yesterday.

And wow, it ran a lot better then I expected. Handling wise it was impressive, stuck to whatever line you gave it. Much credit to the Suspension Smith. Will need to lower the clip-ons, don't feel comfortable with them so high. Also the Pirrelli slicks I had on it made me a lot faster then I should of been. Endless amounts of confidence, expect when the rain came.

Fueling was a bit of an issue. It bogs down *really* badly under 7000rpm, and not just your typical I4 power type curve. It bucked and jolted every time you got back on the throttle. This was manageable on most of the turns but T10 and T2 were very difficult to get right. Which was a pain, cause these are the two turns I need the most practice on. So I cranked the idle up which made about a 30% improvement but it was still very hard to manage, you could never get the power on when you wanted it so you were constantly pushing wide in turns. But it's off to Moto Garage next Friday for a proper dyno tune. I'm pretty sure it was running lean right through the rev's but down low it was un-ride able. Should be sorted next week however.

The brakes on it were mighty impressive. Pulled up almost as well as Mick C's 10. I will invest in some braided lines however as I do not hold a lot of faith in the old lines. They didn't fade during the day but I wasn't pushing very hard. Probably my favorite part of Wakefield is going into T10 with the rear bouncing around every where under brakes and down shifting. Not sure how many ppl get their jollies off when the rear is sliding around everywhere but it's my favorite part of track riding. Now I just need to learn to power slide :D

Once you got up into the higher rev's the bike pulled magnificently. I was actually surprised by how quick it was. For a 96 model with 70,000+kms on her she doesn't show her age to badly.

Also, I put some custom carbon fiber heel guards on as my boots were getting caught in the stock rear-sets. Will post pics soon-ish, they are super ghetto.

Team ghetto's racing off season has began.

And finally, my custom carbon fibre heel guards, to stop my boots getting caught up in the rear sets.
