bout to buy my first bike

ey guys,
jus wondering if i could get ur opinions on the ZX2R.. any advice would b great.. im lookin at gettin the 1990 model in about a week or two as this'll b my first bike. also, anyone know of any good training schools around melbourne? preferably sth eastern suburbs but im not too fussed.. ride-tek seems ok, mite check em out.. and lastly, as this'll b my first time ridin a motorbike lol, any advice on how not to die in the first three months as a learner b4 i go kill myself? lol i wouldnt mind hangin around long enough to get used to (apparently) one of the best feelings in the world, with ur pants on of course

the ZX2R is a good bike IF u find a good example, remember the bike will be almost 20 years old and owned exclusively (id assume) by learner riders... you will need to take someone mechanically minded to have a look with you... and if you are thinking of buying from sumoto, then plenty of melbournites will warn u away from there... i'd have to say they overcharge by a few grand for the bikes they sell...

but anyway on the road, just b a lert (what is a lert??), trust nobody, and excercise caution when required

Actualy it's not that the above mentioned pps over charge by a few grand, rather they sell almost exclusively grey imports hence hard to get parts for and their service is pretty shit from my understanding.

Not too sure bout the Sth East burbs, but Stay Upright is where I did my licensing. If you've never ridden a bike before, I'd suggest the 2 day course in which they'll go through nearly all the basics to keeping yourself safe. http://www.stayupright.com.au/

I had a ZX2 as my first bike. As with anything, if it's been looked after (Unfortunately most of the grey imports haven't) it'll be fine. I'd suggest a new 250 ninja, or the old ZZR's/GPX's. All are great bikes and will do a fine job until you're comfortable and ready for an upgrade once you're off your restrictions.

My only advice riding is try to limit the amount of risk whilst riding. Things like not sitting in people's blind spots and positioning within your lane, if done right, can all help limit the risk. Practice is the key!

Not long upgraded from a zxr250 to a ZZR600, love it!!! All I can say is stay away from the grey imports it cost me $4.5K to rebuild mine and still a pile of crap.
ZZR the way to go, a lot more comfy and definatley hold better value.

Not all grey imports are bad. Although not a Kwak, my first bike was a (grey import) Honda Spada and found it to be an ideal learner's bike.
I'm sure the ZX2R will be just as good - happy shopping!

just get a gpx250. Plenty of em around. Didn't change much over the years so easy to get bits for when you crash it. (yes you will crash it). You only need the little 250 till you get your full license then you'll buy a 600 or bigger.

did my training at HART and found them really good. they do learners at Kilsyth.

I bought a ZX2 which had just had carbs overhauled and bit of other work done and i had trouble free, fun motoring for the 6 months that i had it! I paid a touch oer $2k it was ratty as hell, but it was noisy and that made it so coooool! So like others are saying, they will cause u a massive headache if u buy a shit heap, but that goes with anything in life, find a good one, thrash it for 6-12 months then selling it for what you paid for it!

I've only seen one ZX2R in my very short bike-life. It was broken down on the side of the road. Young guy, "mechanic" who "fixed things himself". I stopped, offered to help him push it to the mechanics and he told me the miriad of "small" problems the bike has and how he's known about them for a while.....

If you're not mechanically minded that bike sounds like about $1500 worth of fixes to make it reliable, and yet he was riding it around and to a newby would appear fine..... be careful dude and enlist a knowledgeble friend!

ps, I've never ridden a 4, but 18,000 redline just blows my mind, doesn't sound like the way to an even head while learning.
