I quit my job. Am i doomed???

Postby MrStompy » Tue Nov 04, 2008 9:30 pm

Ive been a bit quiet on here lately since i dont have a bike an all but ive been reading most of the posts (especially the bikes for sale).
Im hoping someone has an opinion on my current predicament and hopefully some inspiring stories to motivate me...

As a few people know i left sydney earlier this year to move up the coast to do a completely different job (not in IT) but for heaps less money but hopefully for a better lifestyle.

The lifestyle is awesome - we really dont want to go back to the city but the job has been pretty crap from about a month after i started and has progressively gotten worse.
It is not really what i expected and it turns out i am unable to get along with the boss.
So yesterday i spoke to him up and explained to him that it aint working and i dont wanna do it anymore.

Ive never quit a job before without a new one to go to so im pretty nervous right now.

Im tempted to pack up and move back to the city where i know i can get an IT job and reasonably decent money but like i said we dont want to live in the city anymore.
Im thinking just to try get any work here eg in a servo or bottlo and just keep applying for the few decent jobs or Gov jobs that come up here every now and then.
Its frustrating cause i really thought by now the job would of taken off and i would be earning better money etc but it seems i am back at square one again.

Should i stick it out here? Should i avoid going back to a career (IT) that i was sick of anyway or use this as an opportunity to completely start over?
any thoughts or advice will be greatly appreciated :D

It didn't sound like you were happy in that job anyway Stompy so I don't think your doomed.... I left my job from a company that I worked at for 10 years, and never looked back as I got a better job and a better life style at the end of it.

Hope you do well in your job hunting and make sure your happy mate in that job

One door closes . Another one opens .
The job I am doing now came out of the blue , and I turned it down twice before finally taking it on . Has been the best job I have ever been in .
You just never know what will turn up .
Ummmm let me see

Jusy what I was going to say.

We work to live not the other way around. If you love the lifestyle and can earn enough to get by while you are looking for a better job, stay where you are. Don't give your dream up because of a bump in the road. I would stick it out a while and see what happens.

Also congrats on having the guts to leave the job that was making you unhappy- a lot of people waste a lifetime sticking it out in places they hate. You only get one life. Good luck. :)

Have you thought about doing your own thing?

Whatever field you enjoy doing why don't you have a crack at doing it yourself. A mate of mine did the same thing when he moved to Coffs. Got into a job, hated it, chucked it in and set up his own show and hasn't looked back.
It's really all about standing around drinking Dave's beer.

After 10 years working in IT, I decided enough was enough. I was sick of looking at the same four walls, sick of putting up with petty complaints from customers and sick of busting my balls with no appreciation.

It was a big decision to simply pack my previous career aspirations into a little bag, throw them into the river and start fresh. But, I'm a big believer in the old saying "Don't die wondering". Now I love my job, although the appreciation factor is probably a lot lower and the customers complain even more!

Your doomed, DOOMED I tells ya!!! :P

Nah, good on ya for getting out while you still have your sanity mate. I'm in a simialr position myself actually, except I'm still at the job :? The job has become as boring as bat shit and I'm seriously considering getting out and finding something new in the VERY near future. It's all too easy to get "stuck in a rut" and before you know it several years have passed and your still in the same place doing the same shit.

Good luck with the job hunt and hopefully you can avoid having to go back to the city!!

You'll be fine Jayc - I think the universe has a way of knowing when good people need to work and doors seem to open up for them. I'm sorry to hear the venture didn't work out as you'd hoped, but I'm sure you'll find something great to do, and you'll wonder why you didn't quit earlier.

Good luck!

I think it will all be ok. im just a bit of a chicken sh!t. no good at dealing with change etc ;)
the missus is working and her business gets busier every day so hopefully i can be a kept man one of these days :D

a few blokes today were saying they know of people who need some workers so i wont go hungry in the short term.
Starting or buying a business is a definate option its just knowing what one to get into.

My suggestion is think outside the square

Don't think about what you have done, think about what you want to do..
