Laconi In the Leading Mix At Portimao
Portimao, Portugal, 1 November 2008
A wet Superpole contest saw Regis Laconi (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse Ninja ZX-10R) qualify inside the top ten, giving him a third row start for Sunday’s 22-lap races. His team-mate Makoto Tamada could not get into the same rich seam of form, and he finished 26th fastest in what was another changeable day of weather. Clear skies were eventually replaced by cloud and rain.

Laconi has been seventh quickest in the dry final qualifying session this morning, and looked set for a similar place on the grid until the rains arrived with a vengeance. Despite his best final effort, the track was too wet to make further improvements.

Regis Laconi: “I think I made a mistake because I waited too long at the beginning of the session. Then the rain started to come down harder. I stopped in the pits and hoped it would be better. When it stopped raining again I went out and tried to go faster again because it was still very wet on the track surface. There were places where I was aquaplaning and it was quite risky. I had a good qualifying session in the dry and I have a good feeling on the bike here, wet or dry. When the track has a lot of grip the bike is very good.”

Makoto Tamada: “During the qualifying session in the morning we noticed that I was still too slow entering the corners, so we decided to modify the offset and adopt the settings used by Regis. That solution gave us improvements and we tested tyre life as well. We’ll continue to work on the tyre choice during tomorrow morning’s warm up session.”

Fujiwara And Martin Take Their First Dry Steps At Portimao
Portimao, Portugal, 1 November 2008
Katsuaki Fujiwara (GIL Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R) ended qualifying in 24th place overall, after the weather finally changed for the better at the 4.592km circuit in Portugal. Chris Martin (GIL Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R) overcame the effects of a flu virus to go 28th in qualifying, in preparation for Sunday’s 20-lap WSS race.

After much anticipation the Portimao track proved to be all it was expected to be, but its challenging layout made it a real tough prospect for all the riders, particularly with a reduced amount of dry practice time when day one was plagued by heavy rain.

The normal race card has been brought forward one hour at this round, to maximise the available daylight should there be any delays in the running order. Thus the Supersport race takes place at 12.20 GMT, one hour behind regular Central European Time.

Katsuaki Fujiwara: “It’s a little bit of a difficult track, in wet or dry, but it is a very exciting place to ride. It is hard to pass here as well. It is not so easy for us around here, however, and the main thing holding us back appears under braking and during corner entries.”

Chris Martin: “I have had flu for the last few days and I feel terrible. I am not exactly tired on the bike and I have enjoyed riding, but I am just drained. We have had few problems with bike set-up but tomorrow I just want to get away and into the race. The new track is very up and down hill. We seem to be lifting the front everywhere when other people are not, but we will be right for the races.”

"The new Portimao circuit has come in for substantial praise from both World Superbike riders and team bosses following the first day of action around the Portuguese circuit.

The track, officially known as the Parkalgar Algarve Motor Park, is hosting its first event this weekend after being designed and built in less than a year.

Indeed, while the adverse weather conditions that are somewhat indicative of its late October/early November position were causing some problems for the riders as they learnt their way around the circuit, a round thumbs up was nonetheless given for the challenge it represents.

Provisional pole sitter Troy Corser was particularly impressed, suggesting the circuit, which has been designed to feature several undulations, has a layout similar to that of American tracks.

“I love the layout of this track,” he muses. “It reminds me of some of the USA tracks because of all the ups and downs. I like going to new tracks and the challenge of learning them and building up knowledge bit by bit.

“This circuit is a technical track and although it is not hard to learn, it is the kind of track where it's difficult to shave off those last fractions of a second. There are some corners where it's possible to make up half a second or more if you know exactly what you are doing.”

Carlos Checa, meanwhile, states that the circuit is ‘one of the most fun circuits' he has ever competed on, while Regis Laconi adds that he believes the track is very ‘dynamic'.

It wasn't just riders coming out in Portimao's praise though, with Yamaha Italia team boss Massimo Meregalli impressed with the quality of the facilities and infrastructure, particularly given its meagre ten-month building scale.

“It is an unbelievable track, one of the most beautiful circuits in the world. They did a great job here, and all in ten months. I think it is also a good winter test venue, especially as it is in Europe."
