D.I.Y Exhaust mods???

Postby TheDrill » Mon Oct 27, 2008 12:03 am

hey guys...
few questions to ask in regards to exhausts. firstly, is it legal in nsw to cut off ur exhaust completely??? i noticed alot of racebikes with them completely chopped off? makes the bike very loud... loud is good! will it effect performance/engine in anyway? secondly, how can you shorten a pipe at home? is it a matter of chopping part of the pipe out? and again, will this effect performance/engine in anyway??
cheers

It is not legal & never would be, there are two reasons: Noise pollution & environmental pollution. You are better off shortening the pipe rather than loosing it altogether.
Here is a like to shorten an aftermarket pipe http://www.streetfighters.com.au/ASF_HT_shor_can.asp if you can, keep your original pipe as is just encase you need it to get past a defect notice. I would suggest not loosing your muffler it is obnoxiously loud & will attract undue attention to yourself including the plod, & as far as performance is concerned you bike would more than likely backfire & run like shit because of the lack of back pressure

Agreed, i have a straight through pipe for my bike and instead of getting the hassle of not getting pink slips or getting a dodgy slip done, i just swap to the oem pipe, do the test and when i cbf i swap back and she runs sweet again, all on the stock settings :). There's no way i'd sell the oem pipe to make a quick buck, what if this pipe breaks, or if i get a defect? stuff buying another oem pipe or doing something dodgy to "fix the issue".

KEY WORK "Racebikes" They are not simply "cut off" They are generally 'one off ' works factory items starting generally hand fabricated from titanium / carbon fibre and start from around $10,000 ea. Look closely and you will note they are a specially designed tapered pipe with or without a reverse cone depending on the desired engine characteristics /rpm range

will it effect performance/engine in anyway?
secondly, how can you shorten a pipe at home? is it a matter of chopping part of the pipe out? and again, will this effect performance/engine in anyway??

Very load does not equal fast, it equals defect notice. You will lose your mid range and depending on what you do, you may lose or gain top end.

As for damage, on a race bike it doesn't matter as the engine is not expected to last. But long term you will burn out your exhaust valves.

i did on the bur of the muffler cut to slip the end cap on, i obviously don't care what it looks like, just a quick spray of black in the end to reduce yellow sticker visability (hopefully) :)

awsome shorty. i like the look of exhausts that don't stick out further than the rear wheel. they're just tidy and make the rear end look way cleaner/less cluttered. :kuda:
