A PEAK hour motorcyclist has been caught travelling at more than 200km/h in a police blitz targeting major Melbourne freeways overnight.

The 28-year-old Doncaster man was intercepted by police on the Eastern freeway about 6.20pm last night.
Melbourne Inspector Paul Pottage the man's actions were "beyond belief''.
"The consequences of an accident at that speed would be horrendous and result in fatal injuries to the rider and possibly other road users,'' Insp Pottage said.

In total, 15 unmarked police cars were involved in Operation Quebec, a six-hour blitz patrolling the Monash, Eastern Citylink and Westgate freeways. More than 141 penalty notices were issued to motorists.

Other offences detected included a car travelling at 128 km/h in an 80km/h zone, and a driver refusing to undergo a breath test.
Thirteen people will receive a summons for other traffic matters. Seven vehicles were issued with defect notices and six received EPA warning notices. The motorcyclist was interviewed by police and is expected to be charged on summons.

"While we will always have a visible police presence on the freeways around the city I can warn motorists that as a result of last night's operation we will continue to use a variety of unmarked vehicles to detect drivers endangering others on the freeways entering and leaving the CBD,'' Insp Pottage said.

So far this year 35 motorcycle riders have died on Victorian roads - five more than at the same time last year.

................ can't say we haven't been warned

You think I live out in the middle of a farmer's paddock because I ride a Hornet (ok, maybe I do, but when I moved here I had a GPX250R, then a ZZR600)?

I live out here because I don't want to do that sort of shit. 6:20pm on my road is quieter than the MCG carpark the day after the Grand Final. Quieter than Hoffy's place when the scones are finished. Quieter...I guess you get the idea..it's quiet .

Maybe the guy was heading toward the city and not away from it, thus avoiding the majority of the traffic.

I used to Travel the Easten freeway from Springvale Rd to the city at around 6pm and you could sit on 90-100kmh all the way. :)

Amazingly though, the newspaper that made this a headline had tucked away in the corner of about page 5, the story of the top copper from Wagga who was nicked by his own patrolmen at 175 .............

Cant really see someone wicking up 200 in heavy traffic that is only travelling at 40 -50 kph . More like there was a clear space of freeway and he has given it a squirt . He may have been doing something that in my eyes was quiet safe , 4 or 5 lanes wide , no oncoming traffic . no cars in front and a 15 second blast . Whats the 100 to 200 accelaration time for a modern sports bike ? No body here has not done something on their bike that would make for a "shocking" headline for police propaganda . And hopefully we have all done those thing when the circumstances were judged to be safe to do it . Having said that if he was splitting cars at 3 times their speed , a public flogging is in order .
Headlines like that are to be taken with a grain of salt .

Got to agree with you Bill......... I think we have all had the red mist descend at some time, poor bugger just happened to pick the week that Vic police had a blitz on the Eastern,Monash and Eastlink...........speaking of which, the Eastlink being mostly empty takes a LOT of willpower not to give the throttle a tickle
