Do Crash Knobs work

Jut out of interest, pics of a race bung (R&G) off my 7 from a high side involving a rabbit (sort of) at Xmas.
Only just found it, thought I threw it away. So did they work, well yes and no, the bikes raceglass was destroyed but one wonders what it would have been like without the Oggys (yeah yeah I know they are R&G ). As you can see the bolt bent which is how the side got ground off, wicked eh ?

I wanna hear the story about the xmas rabbit???

What is it with you and the road surface that always has you meeting like that good to know you always survive them somehow

I personally think crash knobs (oggies whatever) on bikes is subjective, I use to think that I didnt need them on the 12R because if I stacked that thing it wouldnt be pretty at the speeds that I would lose it at. That was until I didnt get the stand down soon enough and also when it came off the rear stand in the garage andit hit the ground on both occassions resulting in almost 2k cosmetic damage.

Each bike is different though, some mount easily and offer better protection than others, like the 12R as you know Frog there are virtually no really good options for slide/crash knobs without possible compromise of engine block and frame!

My opinion on them has changed, I would now fit them for very low speed drops or the most unfortunate drop of all is at a standstill

I'd recommend the R&G ones over most (all) others for overall structural integrity. Had you done the same thing with an crash or similar branded knob the bolt would have either fractured (not too bad a result) or busted the frame lug/head/other mounting point. R&G use reasonably soft bolts that will bend before the fracture and give out before they damage the frame/engine.

Having said that I had a set of Kaneg ones on my 9 which did a great job of saving the fairings in a 10km/h lowside at EC.

I had a ~30kmh lowside and spin at Winton on the weekend and my bike has crash knobs of some description and all I lost was a brake lever, bar end, and a small strip of paint on the top edge of the bellypan. Definitely worth it, would have trashed the clutch cover otherwise.

some times they work and sometimes they dont, i reckon my last lowside out of turn 2 would have been a lot less expensive if i didnt have em on, even Radar as he walked past the bike later in the pits told me to take em off as he lost count of how many engine blocks they punched holes through

dont think the bike will get them this time around

I think on road bikes a must.. they've saved zed from more damage twice now..

Tis a pain when the bolt snaps and you have a stud to try and get out of the frame.........

Gotta say credit whre due when you bin a bike frog you don't fuck around

saved my old 10 from a low side on the track and I only lost one session with some minor grazing instead of all new plastics and engine covers that I would have required if i didnt have them

as you can see I only sustained minor road rash on the fairings and they were definitly worth the investment



also saved alot of damage to the new pipe and fairing on my new 10r when it fell off the stand a couple of weeks ago.

Ah the Xmas rabbit... going on a Toy Run, tied down a 4 1/2 foot rabbit onto the back of the 7, although it stayed tied there it did manage to slip its crotch down over the ducktail and into the space between tyre and swingarm locking the tyre and highsiding me. This was all the DAY after I had got the old 7 reregistered and major serviced, new tyres etc. Also 2 days BEFORE I was heading down to the prepaid TWF Xmas Party at Lakes Entrance. Bike destroyed on both sides, me with busted thumb and most of the ribs broken in my back and a wrecked KBC and Dainese carbon boots, my leatehrs were already pre scuffed but did split on the shoulder I obviously landed on at some point. Needless to say I never made the Xmas Party either. There was a funny side to it, the cop following the bikes rang it in as a rider/rabbit fatality, it may have seemed funny to him at the time but when about 3 Police cars, an ambulance AND the fire brigade turned up I am guessing he may have got a talking to re radio procedure.

And obviously never did the rabbit any good either...

I still cant watch Donny Darko to this day....

Nice touch having it secured to the bike with all the other bits and I am glad you came out of it sort of ok

Looking on the bright side it made the decision to turn the 7 naked very easy, on the down side I only recently discovered the dent in the front rim....

Damn rabbits- more trouble than they are worth! (Most types of rabbits anyway! )
