98 zx6r starting problem

Wed Aug 13, 2008 1:09 pm

I ride the bike nearly everyday, couldn't get it started Monday even after pushing it down a long steep hill and clutching it a few times. Bad mistake cause I then had to push it up that same hill! :x :x

I know the following:
The motor turns
Spark is good
Fuel pump is good
Stand lock out switch is ok
Clutch lock out swith is ok
Battery is good
Starter is good

I am going to do a few more checks over the next few days when I can. I thought I would post this so I can finally use this forum for something
Anyway I was hoping someone here had this experience or close to it and can share some info.
Or if so happens that you are a mechanical marvel then thanks for the help you are about to give me!

I'm guessing it was turning over just not jumping to life..?

Fuel tap blocked, kink in hose, crap fuel or similar.??

Hey Mark,

How have you checked the fuel pump and spark? Did you do anything to the bike before it broke? I'd start by pouring a bit of fuel down the carb throats and turning it over - if it fires it's a fuel delivery problem (switch, crimped hose, buggered pump or relay).

Yeah a good dose of 'Start Ya Bastard' down the carbs and see what happens. With the way the fuel hoses run it is easy to kink a hose.

Gday Dave,

I checked the spark the usual way, remove plug lead sockets put plugs into them earthed plug via alligator clips to frame. All good there.

The fuel pump I just checked for fuel flow into the carbs which I thought was ok, but i re-visited the pump yesterday and it sounded kinda dodgy(maybe, maybe not).
Anyway I blocked off the outlet hose and power it up and it just keeps on running, which makes me think there's no/little pressure there?.The pump is supposed to stop at around 2 psi I think.
The thing is there's fuel in the float bowls( maybe it's not enough?)

I think the pump is stuffed, will try and get a pressure reading later on. Unless you or anyone can confirm it is the pump from experience...............the cost of a new pump is around an arm and a half! Cheers
