My bike wont start...........Solved

Postby FoxyZX6R » Thu Jun 26, 2008 12:09 pm

I have a 1998 ZX6R

The battery is new and yes its fully charged and has petrol in it.

The bike will start first time with choke on but as the choke is slowly decreased and turned off the bike stops running and wont start again, choke on and off. It is turning over but just wont go "Vrooom".

Please some one help!!

Does it start easily when you try with the choke on?
How soon can you restart it with the choke on?

Sounds like it might be fuel starvation, check fuel tap (position) filter.
Have you had the tank off recently? maybe a kinked fuel line, breather hose.
If you open the fuel cap and hear air rushing in, then it is the breather hose for the fuel tank.
Just a couple of things to check, hope this helps.

There should be a mesh filter in the fuel tap, do you have a w/shop manual?
Another thing to try is move the fuel tap to the prime/reserve position and try again with the choke on.
I know it sounds silly but check the kill switch is in the on position .
I will try and find a parts diagram for your fuel tap.

Check your fuses in case the one for the fuel pump has blown.
I cant see a mesh filter in the parts diagram for your bikes fuel tap, so this shouldnt be a problem.

After getting some advice from Macca, I left the choke on untill the bike had 1-2 bars on the temp gauge before turning the choke off completely and let it run for a bit before turning it off. It restarted 10- 15 minutes later with out choke no issues.

So hopefully problem solved.

When the weather is not blowing a gale here in vic (like it is at the moment) i'll head out and give it a good run.

thanks for the ideas :)

Its not long ago had a "major" service at a shop that will remain nameless. It came back no oil and a few lose bolts that if they had of come out I probly wouldnt be here.

When I have some cash saved it'll go to the new mechanic who I trust who actually is really appreciative that a girl wants to be mechanically minded 8)

that reminds me, I better go start it now and rev it a little and wake the neighbors since they spent 4 hours yesterday arvo revving the shite outta their whipper snipper, keeping me awake (im on nights at the moment and it suxs big time)

Didn't Kawasaki have a "carb icing" problem with the ZX6's some years ago?

I think (and I'm note sure about this) that the system that is supposed to heat the carbs via the engine coolant, actually has the reverse effect in colder weather. I know that the ZRX is hard to start and keep running when it has occasionally been parked outside in cool conditions.

Cheers,
Pete

Easy and logical solution Foxy - Tuck ER into bed with you and throw BF out in cold.. Guarantee bike will start better -

(Also guarantee BF won't STOP) (wingeing)LOL :P
