I was just wondering if anyone was aware of the maximum weight (as in rider + pillion + luggage) a zx9r (2000 model if it makes a difference) will handle?

sounds like you dont have your (ur for those people who can read text language) owners manual... it tells you the recommended maximum weight in the front section somewhere usually near all the specs like weight, engine capacity all that stuff...
my little 250 has a limit of 170 kegs so id reckon a 9 would be around 200... thats a semi educated guess...

200kg would be great and its what im hoping for.
The owners manual inadvertantly got left at the Mechanics when he was stamping the log books. He is posting it out to me, but in the meantime im trying to work out if wife + bag full of stuff is a bad idea.... maybe the wife will have to stay home....

i think you'll be sweet mate... if i bike like that isnt rated to tour two up then thats a major bummer

Here's a PDF on the 2002 model (US).
It says 390lbs, which works out to around 177kg.

oh bother... was really hoping that wouldnt be the case. Kind of thought it might though. Thanks for the link.

200kg will be sweet - just bump the preload up a couple of turns before you load her up.....
ZX9's can tour with the best of them, and a 2-up package of rider, pillion and 20-30kg of Gearsack/tankbag luggage will not be a problem for the bike at all.

This is exactly what i wanted to hear

. In all reality, myself + wife both wearing full kit leathers is going to be right on the 177kg odd mark. As i wanted to carry that 20-30kg of stuff do some touring i began to worry that i might destroy the rear shock.
I'll put up the tyre pressure a couple of PSI and bump up the preload as suggested. I just dont want to ruin my rear shock.

Have you thought about throwing an aftermarket shock in it?

crossed my mind but dont know anything about them... guess its time to hit google.

actually tyre pressure was one thing I forgot to mention - you could add at least 5psi to normal settings, if you are fully loaded up for touring. Don't go over the manufacturers 'maximum' pressure ( eg 45psi), but if you normally run say 36-38 in the rear, bump it up to 41-43.

im dying too..... unfortunately i've had to work every weekend since i got the bike, so apart from brief night time rides (which arent much fun) i havent had a chance to really play with her yet.
Hence my sitting at work all day and day dreaming about being in the wide open country riding around for days..... Chances are when i finally get some free time i wont be on here asking questions anymore.

I up'ed my 9's max weight with Racetech suspension.
I got all new internals for the forks.. and complete new rear shock.
They have different suspension for different weights and they provide a computer program to tell the mechanic how to set the front and back up exactly to your weight and height.. The rear spring is different colour for the different weights.
I got mine through my local bike shop. They got it sent over from the US and installed it all. Cost me around $700 i think. Now my '02 9r is riding sweet and I'm a biggin!... a real biggin!!
