ZX6R, ZX10R, ZX14R, Ninja 1000 etc

alright, im sold on one of these....
can anyone point out the differences between the late 80's, early 90's, and from 96 on....models for me please?
My budget is 6K tops....i know its limited, but from what ive seen i should be able to pick up a '96 7, for around about this figure.....
hints, tips or suggestions on wnything specifically to look out for when lookin?
.........any help in regard to this would be greatly appreciated........thanks in advance......

oh
and the lineage....??
GPX750r became the ZXR750 became the ZX7r
1986-1989 ........... 1989- 1995? .......... ended 2003?
not sure of these dates (can't check at work)
ZXR750 used the basic (then new Generation) GPX engine
but different frame panels etc..obviously
ZX7r got an updated (bigger bore shorter stroke) engine
from the ZXR and a styling update...

DJ you should be able to get a 96 ish model for that. I will keep my eyes out for you.
I sold my 98 model last year for $7500, which was top dollar. Not that i'm complaining.
Anything post 96 is cosmetics. I love em all, so i wont comment, but do have a soft spot for 96rr.

but
$6000 might be a tad low.....
'95 ZXR750s are going for around that on the Trading Post (see website)
although
I see one goose wants $10500 (private sale) for a 93 ZXR

Hi mate, expect to pay 7k+ for a nice zx7r.
6k will get you a nice zxr 750 though. More hp on the dyno too, just not as higher redline or ram air effect on whwn on the actual road at high speed.
Also, stay away from any green wrecks that you might see around.

Like R1's ZX7's werent bought to go to the shops for milk and bread. I suppose you could say that about all sports bikes.
But I would look out for dodgy clutches etc, slipping all that sort of thing as I think that would be the biggest expense on an ageing type bike. Maybe the ZX7 owners might disagree???
But nice choice in bike and hope you find a good one.

Mate, 6K will just get you into the 7R market. I've seen '96ers for that price.
NT on cbr250.com (dunno if you've actually met him in person), 7R is a '96. And by memory i'm pretty darn certain he picked his up for $5.6K. Don't know how many Ks its got on it, but its not much. Eitherway though, it has a suspect history. It's beleived it was an ex-race bike. Because whilst pulling it apart when the gearbox shit itself, they found a full titanium muzzy system (originally thought to just only be the can), and I beleive a race gearbox/clutch system.
Nice gear. Think there was other stuff to, PM him or next time you see him have a yarn, he'd be more than happy to elaborate I'd imagine.
That said, if you decide to go for the ZX7 (old school), its a classic bike. Everytime I see these things I've just gotta stare. Like the 7R, its got that same race history/heritage that owners adore. I beleive the L2 model is the one to get, proper ram air setup on that one if I remember correctly.

my budget was 6k and i was actually after a zx6, but i seen my one (97 zx7r) for 7,500 with reg & rwc. i went checked it out as a tyre kicker but actually ended up buying the bike for 6k without rwc. Spent $200 for rwc and it was all done.
i was looking for about a month. Best advise is to check these sites daily:

Huh?!? You need to do more than cast a cursory glance at a bike to tell if it has a full race system as opposed to just a can? Especially something like a 7R, which has a flange-mount muffler... no bolts joining the muffler to the link pipe, or the merest glimpse of a spring anywhere along the exhaust (Muzzys do use springs, from memory)=>full system.

Correct, if incomplete.
The L2 is the middle year, 1994 of the L-model ZXR750, which, as you say, is the one with the proper ram-air. L1 was the 1993, L3 the 1995. There was nothing but cosmetic differences among them.
The earlier J-model (J1-1990, J2-1991) had the upside down forks and the plastic hoses, while the first of them, the H-model, had right-way up forks and metal hoses.
