1988 gpx 250

ok well not sure if i should post this in here as it is a gpx or in the body mod section or what but im sure someone will be nice enough to tell me if its in the wrong place
this is more just to show my progress and keep some form of record for me showing what i have done and your all welcome to help with suggestions and comments and such...

well here goes this is my bike



and well to me it is not actually my bike i may own it and i may ride it but i have done nothing to "define" it as mine for example if i was to park in a carpark at the shops and another gpx 250 parked next to mine same paint job how would a mate or anyone tell whos is whos besides mine having a noticeable dent in the tank??? understand what im on about now there is nothing to define it as "my bike" so to speak

so i decided i dont really like the red so at first i was going to sand the tank back to fix it myself as im a tight ass and dont want to spend the money on buying a new tank then i was simply going to remove the red wheels and all the stickers and there ya go a black bike as i do like black
but once i started on the tank i found out there was so much more hiding under the paint i was expecting a few surprises but not so much bog and the fact that a siff has less holes then my tank i mean i knew there was the dent and that it had a tiny leak down the bottom on the right side as i could see a small bubble in the paint starting to grow as it had gone from a pin prick size bubble to about a 5cent piece in around 4-5 months so i went stuff it the whole tank back to bare metal and thats where i found out this is going to be fun but im not planning on just covering it in bog like the previous owner im going to silver solder it all up good and proper like and attemp to remove as many dents as possible then use minimal bog to touch it up before primer and paint.

also i started remove the stickers on the from off the side and have given it a rub back with some wet rub sandpaper as there were a few chips in it yes i have been slack and have not got those 2 side bits ready to be resprayed yet as there are a few cracks that im hoping to fix up first

also have removed almost all the stickers of the front fairings the gpx down the bottom the red stripes te big fat kawasaki sticker and some of the paint on the front and rear wheel just because i was getting bored of carefully using mums hairdryer to remover the stickers then using some glue remover crap that removes all that sticker left over stuff so i used some polishing block thing to remove the paint and polish the wheels at the same time till tea was ready then have left it

so ill continue this as i do more and ill add photos of what ive done so far later tonight or sometime tomorrow when i get the chance

Good stuff - more pics though as you go makes for good entertainment.
Your on the right track eith the hairdryer for removing the decals. But try Shellite for removing the residue. Cheap and simple and you will find it has many other uses too.
Tank repair is a very specialised area and good luck with that. It involves far more complex skills than the average panel beating. Silver solder is definitely a great repair method but you need to first obtain a close to actual shape or else you may as well spare yourself the bother and just throw bog at it. From the looks of that ding it does not look possible to dolly it out sufficiently and you may want to look at splitting the tank open along the seam, beating it out and then welding it shut again. Once again alot of fuss and bother but very rewarding if you are wanting to learn the skills involved.
I am sure that many people will discourage you and realistically it may even workout cheaper to buy a new one from Kawasaki but if you are serious about developing your hands on skills, knowledge and you have the ability then why not? From an engineering perspective if it was able to be manufactured then it is able to be repaired - you just have to factor in the two most crushing elements; time and cost.

On my GPX250, I have cut off the rear fender and made a braket to mount the number plate and stock indicaters. I can't believe how much better it looks.

sorry i have not updated but i pulled the bike apart and started sanding then had to leave and work in another state
however i am back now so i need to get the bike back on the road so things willl be a lil rushed ill upload what ive done in the past 2 days if i can find the pics

but at least its now at a stage that it can be registered still looks tidy and when i have a few hours spare i can fix or go over the few little things that i have not been able to get to a standard that im happy with


that fender chop does look nice woteva im wanting to do something like that however i was not thinking of chopping as far back as you have but now youve given me some more thoughts

by the way does anyone know where i can get some paint that will clean up the plastic eg around all the switches and what not as it looks badly faded now that i have resprayed the bike

What happened ?? You got it all fixed, and then had a crash ? Doesn't look good at all.

yeah got it fixed up and had a barina attack it but good thing is i can repair it when i find the parts cheap enough but no real rush and as it was not my fault i got a payout which i got 2 weeks ago which was 2500 not bad considering all up the bike once finished cost me just under 1000 to do as i did it all myself

so now im riding round on a lil red gpz250 (i think) has nothing on my gpx but itll do as i have bought another gpx just waiting for it to arrive from another state

its red and black twin disc front and has the brake/indicator lights i wanted

so once that arrives i think ill just respray it and then look at what else it needs wont do much to this one

my bike should arrive next week b4 the weekend so i hope the weather is good this weekend so i can take it out
