Installed a set top box today but...

Postby mick_dundee » Mon Jan 28, 2008 3:28 pm

Got the set top box working all good but now no tv reception thorugh the vcr as I took the aerial from there to plug into set top box, is there a double adapter type thing for an aerial socket or is there a work around? Know I can tape the set top box but that's not the ideal.

You can buy a double adaptor type coax plug for the antennae.

Alternatively, just run the antennae cable into the vcr, then from the loop through from the vcr to the set top box and then to the TV.

Farkin VCR - what decade did that come from? Mate, even set top boxes come with DVD recorders or Hard Drives built in. The age of recording media that requires moving parts is almost dead - and anything that needs a tape of any kind is just damn antiquated.

Hmmm no moving parts... that would be ok... still some time off I'd imagine... flash memory is still a bit $$$... hence why the uptake of SSD's is taking ages... IMHO...I think HDD's will remain the mainstay for high volume data for quite some time yet.... albeit cheaper and higher capacity.... so there will still be moving parts for a while ;)

But yeah... VCR.... pfft, what is that? you dinosaur ;)

Post Office offering 1Gb memory stick for $15 last week. It won't be long before Memory stick catch up with the price of hard drives, not so sure about data transfer rates or stability though.

the 1 & 2gb market has been uber cheap for quite some time... i picked up a 1GB toshiba stick for $14 about..... 10 months ago... 4 - 8GB sticks are still reasonably higher.... and price per MB is still way above a HDD... But I look forward to the decrease in price... I'd love a reasonable price 500GB SSD :) get a few of those in RAID 0 and it would rock for video editing! or gaming....

ive been doing lot of research on these...

the analogue tuner ones are down to abt $400... the standard def tuner are at abt $600.... problem ive got, is that over here (maybe other states too) .. HD channels broadcast different stuff to standard def... so i want a hi def tuner with a HDD recorder... doesnt appear to exist yet..

i have a HD tv and tuner... hence why i want a dvd recorder/HDD that picks up HD...

according to all the local elec dealers, they dont yet.. well not at a affordable price./... reason is that to record on DVD in a HD format would
a.use more than 4.7GB that a dvd holds
b.create movies off HD tv that are of equal quality to a dvd

so i was told, and this is why they *think* they havent been released yet..

You sure can do it.... with a media centre PC ;)

Or just get the LG LST5402P or LG LST5403P

Both have Twin HD Tuners and an integrated HDD recorder... exactly what you want....

those LG tuners.. are they dvd burners as well?? i guess i could look into these... but if they are JUST PVR's, then they are no good to me.. i need a dvd player with HDMI 1080i upscaling .. as my shitty old dvd player is ..well..shit...

No DVD there... so you don't want a HDD recorder with HD tuner.... you want a...... HDD recorder /DVD player with HDTV tuner..... be more specific next time :p

installed a set top box for my old man the other day, spent more time figuring out his over complicated digital reciever/amp thing than i did the stb, (hour and a bit versus under 10 mins including all tuning/finessing).

every stb ive seen has an antennae loop in and loop out, i have the out go to the vcr and then the telly, that way they all get a half decent signal. that way if you get the shits with the stb you can go back to analog without a hitch.

Then again i have a digital recorder too, and i have split the signal after the rf filter (some dumbass on the same amp has something earthed incorrectly and its feeding a 50hz loop into the antennae, this filters it out) and one goes to the vcr/tv (gave up on the STB as i have enough gizmos at the moment) and the other goes to the hd recorder (a pc running mythdora & has 2x HD cards & one analogue bt87x card and a gob of ram & hdd space).
