Free DVD burner software- which one?

I'm trying to find a program (free) off the net so can copy DVDs with my laptop. So far have tried Final Burner and DVDcopyGold. Neither work. Final burner burnt something onto the disc that wasn't visible to windows and DVDcopy needs the file to be in ISO format to burn. My laptop is a new Acer with Windows XP installed. It only has one drive- so it has to copy the DVD to the harddrive then burn from there. Is there any program available at no cost that can do the job, and be spyware free? Thanks!

New Acers usually come with NTi CD/DVD software, which can copy DVDs.

Yep mine DID coz it came with Vista- was the worst computer I have ever used when it had it- kept locking up and took forever to do things. Flies now with XP but has no software to burn.

What sort of DVD copying are we talking about?

If it's data then I've just got what came with the PC.

If it's movies, I use DVDShrink which lets you pick and choose what bits of the DVD you want so you can go double layer to single layer easily, otherwise it can also compress it a fair bit for you if you want to keep it all. You also need DVDDecrypter or similar to burn the ISO image it creates. Sometimes it doesn't handle copy protection real well so I have to resort to another product DVDFABDecrypter which gives you some customising ability as well. It copies the DVD to the harddrive so you can then use DVDShrink on it.

For people not right into the technical side of burning, DVDShrink is what you want. Very easy to use, and all you need is nero installed (which usually comes with a dvd burner when you buy it!)

I personally use DVD Decrypter, or lately I've been encountering a newer type of protection which Decrypter can't handle, so I use DVDFab Decypter. For the actual encoding I use CloneDVD or DVDShrink.

hell even nero has trial mode options, and you can buy it if you want it (or just get a serial number or spare cd from someone who bought a cd drive)

And a nice little program called "ripit4me" that makes using the above very easy, start this up and it controls all the steps necessary with DVD-decrypter & DVD-shrink, prompts user for some input and easy to follow menus: RipIt4Me Generally I keep menus but not the extras, I also want the DVD to skip straight to the start selection.

Those three programs are all you need to rip, render, copy, and then burn with DVD decrypter or Nero, very little input required and all are totally free (donation if you like to keep using it) and have no Trojans, bots or any crap that calls home attached.

Reminder: Copy write law allows the owner of a dvd/cd to make one complete copy for backup purposes only. (Or as I am lead to believe)
