Very sootie exhaust end + take off power loss

Yo,

I've known that my bike had been running high, but I checked out my exhaust today and noticed quite a build up
of black soot inside the exhaust end of my pipe, caked up about a 1.5 thick. - - -took a while to clean out.

running way too high looks like - any way to lean out the mixtures without going to shop?

Also i noticed of late that my bike doesn't do well when accelerating quickly off a dead stop. Its really sluggish off the lights
i need to rev it to take off and i only really feel any thrust when i reach 3000rpm before that i feels like its boged down. -almost feels as if it might stall, it only doesn't feel that way when i crawl off the lights (at around about the same speed as a car would)

Problems related?? anyone give any advise as how to fix? or what to say to a mechanic so he'll know exactly
what to fix>?

background - About 6 months ago - got my bike rejet and shimmed + a major service. Asked for it to be tuned for more bottom end (already had aftermarket pipe + K&N air filter)

anyway, for a carbybike with stock CV carbs, look at this. Remember carby problemscan be related to how far the throttle is opened, at 1/2 its a different cause to 1/4 its different to 1/16 or so. Just read through that link and it'll give you a rough idea of where its rich.

1996 ZX6R - carbon can, k&N air filter.

Could the carb mixture need balancing again? it was only done 6 months ago, i only average about 180km - 200km a week.
Perhaps a carb balance and new spark plugs would help?

Don't know much about the Jet sizes, when i got the jets changed over 6 months ago - my fuel economy dropped pretty severely.
17litre tank and i run out of fuel after 165kms (without reserve) - don't push the bike very hard.

thats pretty shitty economy from a 600 ! about 10k per litre ?? even the sports-barge 12 can pull about 13km / litre on the highway.....

I think you need to take your bike to Motorcycle Weaponry, talk to Roger, and get it tuned on the dyno. The air/fuel (A/F) mixture sounds like it is way too rich. Dyno-tuning will sort this out quickly, and should also get you better economy into the bargain.

I Normally fill up with 98 octane or 95 (premium) depending on where i go (mainly eeeeek shell)
but i've resigned to only use normal unleaded 91 for a while to see how that goes (was scared of staying on 91 incase my fuel economy got even worse!)

Where is motorcycle weaponry? can they do the tweaks to carbs, mixtures, jets etc after doing the dyno or do they only check then send you to a mechanic to do the required work?

Motorcycle Weaponry is out on the North Shore area as far as I know - Will check and give you the addy shortly (its here somewhere )

They can do complete tuning in-house, so you won't have to take your bike to another mechanic.

OK - here is the website. The guys are located in Mona Vale, I think thats out near the northern beaches ?? It couldn't hurt to give them a call, describe the problem, and get a quote for a tune-up. If I lived in Sydney, these are the guys I would use.

shit...i get 200km out of abt 14L in the zed...my 99 zx6r use to get abt 300km to reserve...
