Blue tooth helmet headset

I posted this before the big crash of August 07, and promised at the time a little report once I had used it on the move. Well two weeks ago when I did that novice riders ride I got to test it out.

I Recieved a phone call just before I hit the 60 zone coming into Alexandria. I had hoped someone would call while at the speed limit, but this gave a pretty good indication. I answered the call as I was slowing, probably still doing 80-90kph. It was Dangerous Dave sorting dinner arrangements for that night. I had a chat for a bit while riding into the Cafe for the morning tea stop. I parked the bike all still while talking to me, then he asked where I was. He was surprised to find out that I had spoken to him while on the move. He reckons it is clearere than my bluetooth handsfree in the car.!!

Once I have tested it on the 9, at something starting with 2....i'll fill you in on how it goes!!!

While on Yesterdays ride another mate called. It was in the fast sweepers between Buxton and Marysville. Not sure exactly what time it was, but at a guess, it was at least 1.40pm....... . So I answered the call thinking that my mate wouldn't be able to hear a damn thing I said. Not so apparently. I didn't let on as to where I was or what I was doing, so we had a chat for a few minutes till he finally gave me a lead in..."Nice day for a ride" he says. I then told him where I was and exactly what I was doing. Even ran it up to a later time, about 1.50pm and he said it was as clear as a bell!!! He wouldn't have even known I was on the bike if I hadn't told him! He is a rider too, so would recognise the sounds if he heard them. But he reckons he didn't have a clue hearing only my voice and not another sound!!!

Thanks for the update, sounds like a good buy. A bit expensive, but then when was anything involving bikes cheap?

I'm a bit hesitant about installing anything that distracts from the main task of controlling the motorbicycle though. It's just a little bit of attention that you have to take away from riding, but it's not like I have a lot of spare cogitating power to begin with.
I guess most of the time it'd be okay - but I wouldn't like to try it in heavy traffic.

I'd be interested to see how it works with voice recognition dialing, but if it's as clear you say, it should be fine.

Ah well. One more thing for the wishlist

Not to rain on yr parade...but I got mine from Strathfield car radios in Parramatta for $160!

I think they had a stand at the show this weekend but i didnt take a look

they normally retail for $249 each..

Glad you reminded me Mick! I have now tested this unit on the ZX9 under controlled conditions on a closed course and am pleased to announce you can order a Latte' and Eggs Benedict from the cockpit with absolute clarity and provided the chef doesn't fcuk things up, is ready when you arrive!!!

I bought my wireless bluetooth for $110 (Cardo Scala)- the cheapest I have found anywhere and appears good to about 120km/h. This is the type the cops use.

I am looking at getting a bluetooth headset but am not sure which would be the best is to get. Can anyone suggest the best brand/model to get and where to buy one from?

Nolan n109 is about $ 400 - speaker/mic. harness + bluetooth unit is about $ 400. Works OK - helmet suffers from wind noise ( insert inevitable fart joke here ), so earplugs are required, but at 60 - 80 km/h audio is still reasonable.

I picked up a blueant unit, they say its good for 130kph, but i couldnt hear a thing past 60, and the mic was even more useless.

the VR answering would answer immediately due to wind noise, and then you wouldnt know, because it was almost bloody silent(even at full volume in loud mode). The mic cuts in and out, and the entire unit was altogether a complete waste of my money.

long story short, dont buy one, theyre useless!

I disagree entirely. I have had mine for over a year now and it has performed faultlessly. I have had it fitted in three different helmets. It worked best in my BMW Helmet, and worst in my OGK! The BMW Helmet, I had to use the low volume setting so that it didn't blast my ear and the voice answering worked faultlessly. I can hear and be heard clearly at speeds well over 200 gazelles an hour.

In the OGK which is where it performs the worst, I have to have the volume on the higher setting, due to the cheek padding forcing placement of the earpiece further away from my ear than is ideal. Other than that, it works faultlessly also. I can hear and be heard clearly at speeds up to 200 Gazelles an hour.


Perhaps yours was not fitted correctly???? I also know of two other people who have them. They have just done a round Oz tour and love them. The hubby in the pair actually broke one of the fittings early on in the piece and it was replaced without question while travelling. I can't say enough good things about this unit. It's transferrable from helmet to helmet, is clear and audible in 99% of cases if fitted correctly and has proven to be quite robust, with me personally using it for over 50,000 klms in all sorts of weather thus far. The battery life is awesome, I can talk all day and it doesn't go flat. As a matter of fact, it will go about 4 or 5 days with constant use before needing to be charged! All in all, I would highly reckomend this unit, with the only negative I can see being that fact that it is not a stereo earpiece, so listening to music is a little off! Other than that I can;t fault them!
