how to clean leathers

Mon Jun 11, 2007 8:28 pm

Ive got mud caked onto my leathers.

I had an "incident" today that requred me to leap off my perfectly good motorcycle into the freezing cold mud.

now i wanna know your tips on the best way to remove it.
i didnt want to just hit them with the hose cause they will be a prick to dry and that might screw the stitching mightn't it.

im thinking i let it dry then pick off as much as possible then i could try hot soapy water but i reckon i would end up using as much water as the hose idea. but i cant think of any other option.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Mate we have raced in the pouring rain before & it is just a matter of letting the leathers air dry.... they will stiffen a little but that will go away quick enough the next time you use them.
BTW take out the liner padding & armour to speed up the process

Brilliant thinking
Just wash them... small amount of soap then air dry them ... hang em up for a week to dry & she would be right.
Cant hurt the hide or stitching

An old post but worth reading 'Barrabob's' post on Lanolin spray from Supacheap,
http://www.ksrc-au.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15570

after a light wash give it a good spray with the Lanolin Household ($9.50 atm from SupaCheap), apply liberally and will soak in within minutes, leave out for a few hours and then buff the sticky stuff off with a piece of towling, nice and soft and waterproof. Did the boots as well, seems good gear.

mate im sure the stitching will hold up after being wet... otherwise all riders would end up riding naked in the rain...

hot tip- dont dry ur leathers in direct sunlight, it makes em stiff....

Best way I have found after trackday trips to the ground is let the mud dry, then brush them with a damp chux cloth. Leave them to dry inside, then repeat if necessary.

The gist of the story is in here

i will very soon start expanding on that though and the tale will grow and grow till before long its something very exciting. :)
basically i ran out of road while recovering from a f**kup and as soon as i left the road the bike went down into mud that was over ankle deep. which is what saved the bike from damage.
but did not save me from public humiliation and ridicule

I thought it was pretty funny though so im telling everyone :)

its all fun and games :)

thanks everyone for the tips.

i was just a little concerned about getting the leathers really wet but as you have pointed out that wont be a problem.

i tried to get some pics of the mud just for laughs so if any of them are any good i will post them up.

Must have been something in the air this weekend - I too ran wide and went ploughing through the mud. Somehow I saved it and I don't really know how. It was turn 12 at P.I. and I stopped just over half way past the pit building!

Glad to here you and the bike are ok!!

As for cleaning the leathers, mate give them a good hose and air dry without the armour. Did it to mine and no problems. Besides does a cow shrink when they get wet???
