The Beemer Saga!

Looksl ike the Hi vis is up for a workout. Just had a call...the bike is ready????? Anyways, I am on the 2.00 oclock, arriving Sydney 3.20 a cab to Rydalmere by hopefully 5.00pm to pick up the bike then over to Russ' to pick up the pannier brackets, then start off towards home, this time hopefully no mechanical issues !!!! See ya's!

well Strika has picked up the bike and all is good. In fact he is already on the road home to Melbourne on it.

Fark that guy loves his touring !!

Arrived into sydney about 3.30pm, jumped a cab to A mate's place at mascot to grab my panniers then straight to Motohansa to pick up the flying marshmallow. Then ducked over to St Leonards to grab the new pannier brackets, then jumped on the motorway. Arrived in Goulburn at 9.30.

The gearbox is nice...but i have a feeling they have put in an R box not an RS box????? From memory the old one sat at 3300rpm @ 100kph. The new one sits @ 3600rpm @ 100kph???? I'll have to check my original posts to confirm. If that's the case,then it's back to Motohansa to have it done again!!!!

A few more sands have fallen through the hourglass since I last posted.

I arrived in Goulburn last night about 9.30 and pulled in for a feed and a nights sleep. It was only another two hours to Young, but the cold was starting to bite through the two thermal tops, singlet, sloppy joe, thermal pants, jeans and thermal socks as well as my gloves. Added to that, the road from the hume turn off, through Boorawa, Murringo and onto Young is Roo country, with a state forest running along the northern side of the road.

I stayed at the Bakers Motel a new one recently completed right at the Fwy exit. In hindsight, Rooms 11-18 back onto that FWY, don't get them. The rest are well insulated heated and appointed. Buggered if I know how much it was as it was an unusual manual, self check in! You could very easily dud this system. You pick up a phone outside reception which dials the motel across the road. the girl answers and tells you to go to room 8, which has a key in the door and just fill in the paperwork on the bench with your credit card details! Strika being Strika though, filled it in properly and asked em to send a rcpt!

I got up fairly early this morning and was on the road at 6.30, with the intention of eating breakfast with my Mum about 8.30am! Bloody hell was it cold, I had every item of warm clothing I owned on, including my waterproof winter gear and I was still cold....at least while on the Fwy anyhoo! Once I turned towards Boorawa, although the temps actually dropped further, I got warmer taking corners and dodging as many bumps as I could. It's not an easy thing to achieve on this road, it has to rate as perhaps the bumpiest road I know. The flying marshmallow acquited itself amazingly well in this area. the 9 would have been bucking and kicking and trying to throw me off at every opportunity, whereas the flying marshmallow just floated over the top of all but the biggest of hits! But rubber mounted bars took care of 99% of the jarring.

The road from Murringo to Young I know well, having driven and ridden along it hundreds of times over the years. from a few kilomtre the Young Side of Murringo the surface improves, and the road becomes an undulating sinewy slice of tarmac. I took the opportunity to warm up and had a little dip along here. The farking marshmallow requires a certain err...... knack to make it turn, but once you have it on it's side it does hold a line......OK..ish!

I pulled into Young with warm breath still misting the visor. It was 8.15!

I stayed till 11.00am having breakky with mum, who naturally imparted some of her best homecooking in the form of warm porridge, a cup of brewed tea, local baked wholmeal fresh bread, spread with locally grown and made by my Mum jams and preserves! mmmmmmmm!
Naturally Mum also gave me a jar of her plum jam and one of her tomato relish to take home with me!!!! Gotta luv ya Mum doncha!

I rode from Young to Cootamundra and dropped in to see my brother for half an hour and then continued on through Wallendbeen, Junee, Wagga, The Rock, Gerogery, jindera and Albury for fuel! I had lunch here also. As I had taken some backroads, I had made up some time, but the new gearing certainly doesn't lend itself to higher speeds. The bloody thing was tapped out at a play school clock says 200, allow for the regeared error and it's most likely now 180!!!!!!! Gotta get that sorted and pronto!

I then jumped on the freeway and rolled down the hill into Melbourne for the next three hours without stopping once! I must say marshy certainly is a comfy mount over long distances and that tank is pretty awesome too! I reckon at a steady 120 I could prolly get 360-380klms out of it, maybe more if it was geared how it was!

I played around sitting my feet up on the cylinder heads like fwd controls on a harley Passed a few cars like this one handed smoking my pipe!

An uneventful jaunt from Albury had me hitting the Bolte Bridge about 4.45pm. As I headed down the other side of the Bolte and into that luverly right hand cambered sweeper followed by a left just like it...... I came up behind a guy on a KTM 6 something Mootard. He must have been going well below the speed limit as I caught him quickly and passed him so as not to have my run through the sweeper hindered! He wasn't real keen on a BMW passing him, so he wicked it up and came after me. Now this turn from memory was a good $1.80-$2.00 on the 9, i thought I'd see where $1.60 put me and rolled it into the turn. Surprisingly the big sloppy marshy banked over and over and over. ( I cheekily had a look see how close the cylinders where, but there was at least a few inches to go, so I must be gettin woosy in my midage! The Katoom rider tried to catch me through the turn but couldn't and I pulled a gap through the left and onto the West Gate. He came up alongside in the next lane halfway across the bridge looking up and down at the Beemer and me in my full textile touring suit!!! I can imagine him thinking...."Faark..what's wrong with me tonight, I can't beat a BMW!!!! I'm back off to SBK School!!!"

Arrived home near on the dot of 5pm! Marshy now has 48,000k's on it!

HOFFY !!!! are you readin' this mate ??? The pipe'n'slippers brigade is struggling to pull a fanny hair over the ton Mate !!!!! You gonna HOSE him in the Hi-Vis Challenge !! The sports-barge won't even need to get into 4th !!!!

Glad you got home OK Marty, bloody hell if those pricks have bunged in the wrong box you should put an Exocet up them that would be very poor form.

First avail time slot it's going back Gos! 3200-4000 is a sweet spot for touring. Plus it makes it a little more bearable when cruising at $1.50. Now it's sitting on feckin 5k! The thing only redlines at 7.5!!!! So it's vibes city when making way!

Hoffy hasn't got a chance if there are any corners involved! She aint fast, but once up to speed it's farkin hard to slow her down, so corner speed becomes not only the norm but a neccesity to survive!!
Anyhoo, it wouldn't matter up the Old rd....it would just mean I only had to use the top two gears!!! Hoffy will be in 1st gear like always!

Just got off the phone from Motohansa. On later model RS's they went to a shorter 5th gear,with longer final drive. So next visit to Sydney they are going to put the taller final drive gear in mine. That will put the revs back to where they should be!!!! Fuckin sands n hourglasses!!!!!

You know how you can flop your 9 from side to side with the flick of a wrist! Well......Marshy is not like that! Not even close!!! Marshy likes a nice big heavy german arm to push the bars in order for it to slowly lay over! But sure, you're right! Once over, they hold an OK line! It's still an eerie feeling when the road drops away a little while cranked!! I'm still not sure if it's still stuck, or gone!!!

Pity bout having to go back what a hassle.... good to hear you are back to enjoying yourself but

I finally got around to starting to fit the top box to the Beemer this arvo. I seem to be running into obstacles at every turn with this feckin thing! When I purchased the top box and brackets from Bike Biz, I specifically asked several times if ALL the bracketry to fit it is included and was told most definately YES! However, as seems to be the norm lately, it was not the case and is missing a bracket which bolts fron the subframe to under the back of the plate mount! I rang Bike biz and shared my joy with them. They are going to speak with the supplier and get back to me!

Here is a pic of it mounted up all bar the rear supporting bracket!

When I purchased the top box and brackets from Bike Biz, I specifically asked several times if ALL the bracketry to fit it is included and was told most definately YES! However, as seems to be the norm lately, it was not the case and is missing a bracket which bolts fron the subframe to under the back of the plate mount! I rang Bike biz and shared my joy with them. They are going to speak with the supplier and get back to me!

Here is a pic of it mounted up all bar the rear supporting bracket!
