slip on, or full system

For general Technical and Performance Discussions

Bit of a thread hijack, im currently considering the same sort of thing for my '05 636. I'll be doing all sorts of rides so it includes trackdays etc. and i'll be getting an air filter and piggyback ecu and getting it dynotuned.

i was wondering if anyone here actually has ever put a full system on their 636 or similar? what were the gains over just a slip-on? Sound, performance after tuning etc?

I'm currently considering the Akra or ARATA full system for ~$1200US or just the slip-ons for $450US. Quite a big cost difference. Anyone with any experience with these?

As always (with the except of one or two bikes) the advantages of full-system over slip-on aren't huge - 5hp, and a kilo or two at best.

If that's worth an extra $800US to you, go for your life. Some people like customising their bike - others spend the money buying a faster bike. ;) Up to you really - is the 636 worth spending that much on (to you)?

:? a full Ti system will weigh about 1/3 of a stock steel system. Its way more than just a kilo or 2 . I lost almost 6 kilograms when changing the stock ZX12R system for a Yoshi slip-on, steel mid-pipe and retaining standard steel headers........if these last 2 were Ti, the weight loss would have been closer to 9kg.... thats a hell of a lot on a bike that weights 210kg dry.....

This system added 15hp to the 12........and worth every cent.

Chingrish - if you really are looking for as many HP as possible, get a full Ti system. If its mainly for looks and a better note, then a slip-on or bolt-on can will do the job fine.

OK, I.K. will probably have my guts for garters for this!!!! But i disagree with his statement that the exhaust valve removal will rob the bike of bottom end or midrange. I know from dyno graphs (Before and afters) on both a mates ZX6R (05), and Dangerous Dave's R1 that removal of the valve did nothing to rob any bottom or mid, in actual fact on the R1 it picked up on both. Then once a set of fufflers was fitted, it increased again along with an increase in peak power.

As for mufflers for the 636, and Akrapovich is one of the best I have seen. When Gavin cosway first built Shris Seatons bike in 05, he couldn't get hold of a full Akra, and used a slip on for the first race. When the full system was put on it, it made 2 more HP, right at the top with no noticeable diference anywhere else. I would be inclined to just stick an Akrapovich muffler on it. And FWIW it also made a little more power througout the rev range than a couple of other systems that they tried. :)

The standard headers are quite good and with a can, remove the cat PCIII and dyno you will be more than happy. If you are handy you can remove the cat yourself PM me and i will post some photos.

anyone know how if i can gut out the cat on the zx6?

Also with just the air filter swap, the bike becomes more smoother and more responsive at all rev range. The induction noise sounds smoother and nicer too. howls more :)
