Supply versus demand decides what it is worth, wait and see what it sells for in another 20 years

Smitty, pull ur head out ur arse, even tho its a ford its a classic and an awesome car.

and its not worth $683,000... simple

there ARE 2 Fords worth money
an original GT40
and an original Shelby cobra
far better cars than a Falcon

go buy one of those

It obviously is worth that much if some one was happy to pay it.
That is a bit high but you would not find a showroom condition original GTHO for under $450K. And they are going up in value all the time. They only made 300 and estimates are there are around 50-120 left. When that number falls again you will see another big jump in the price.

Phase 3 GTHO  The legend has far exceeded the mechanical reality. Like Smitty said - the GT40 and the Shelby Cobra are a much better car any day.

Great investment though - like stamp collecting the product itself is inherently worthless but desireable to some because of rarity. This guy (the 683K buyer ) reckons it'll be worth a mill by 2012.

What a farkin waste of money..

Wed Mar 28, 2007 10:47 pm

Oh, I don't know. Basic economic principles tell us that something is worth what someone pays. And unless he demolishes it, he wont be selling it for less than he paid. I suspect he may already have more than one, and thus he has, artificially or not, driven the price of all of them that little bit higher.

Anyhow...anyone watch the episode of Top Gear, where all the old super cars got wasted around a track by a diesel Astra

Reality is, garden variety cars now are basically better in every way to the "performance" cars of old, except maybe in outright speed or acceleration.

Wed Mar 28, 2007 10:49 pm

BTW...

Person I know that told me about the time they owned one, then found out it was stolen must be kicking themselves now.

They decided the best course of action was to grab an angle grinder and cut it to pieces for disposal

Allegedly.

exactly...........
who in their right mind would try driving a 35 yo old car
with 35 year old tyre technology...or brakes

as balanse sez...the myth has surpassed the legend
it was good in 1970...but in 2007?

Thu Mar 29, 2007 8:58 am

Smitty, no argument that to drive nowadays they must suck, BUT, they're still an absolute legend in Aus motoring history and still a better investment than real estate, assuming you can handle the 600k initial outlay....

Hmmm the same could be said of the Unrestricted 12 V's a new 10 or 14 Smitty.

The early Aussie muscle cars should always mean more to us than the yank or pommie ones. They are part of true Aussie motor racing history. If i had the cash i'd love a GT or even a XU1

Yes they are old, they don't have the creature comforts we are all used to now, They are loud, they rattle, they shake but they have something most new cars don't. Raw aggression and pesonality.

As far and Myth and Legend. Have you ever been in one Smitty? I have and i will never forget it. It was a rush (maybe not the same as doing a 1:53 on a GPZ around the island though)

Long live the HO

You left off a GTHO Phase 4. Yes, they exist. I know someone who has one, and has been repeatedly offered 6 figures by Ford America for it, and turned them down.

actually Stace..I have
and have driven/been a passenger in most of the Ford GT range
XT GTs XWs XYs and XBs

don't forget....I also have owned a HT GTS 350 'Bathurst' Monaro
and a triple webered LJ Torana (12 sec ¼s anyone?) plus others
so I sorta feel I can comment (the grey hair helps  )

In perspective..the current range of Aussie fast cars
are so much better than the 70s supercars
better braked, better suspended and handling
and FASTER...my SS goes faster than a HO ever will

and anyone with a FPV or HSV vehicle would say
..I am even faster

so, the HO or 350 or 6pack (cant forget the Mopar guys)
in its time was good but today?
not SIX HUNDRED and EIGHTY THREE THOUSAND $s good

cheers
Smitty

Yes and the Mona Lisa is only a piece of old canvass with some paint on it. The value is in the exclusive ownership and history. It is no longer about how great the car is.

invalid comparison
the Mona Lisa (or the Last Supper or Blue Poles)
is there so all who want to see it can

I have no doubt our sub-$700k HO
will NOT drive daily on the roads, will not race
at Bathurst but will be tucked in someone's
locked and secured garage

How is it invalid? It still has a market value and is no comparison to a photo as far as quality goes.
There are still very rare paintings that are in private collections worth millions of dollars.
