Creation of my race bike (lots of pics)

Mon Mar 26, 2007 1:00 pm

Many of you (particularly the Vic crew) will remember my long suffering CBR600, and perhaps some of the crazy antics I got up to on it in the last couple of years. Well, after 30 months of hard yakka, 2 crashes and 65,000k were clocked up, it has finally been retired to the occasional track day.

And so the conversion begins.

The starting point

All none essentials have now been removed

The ride height was raised using two washers at the top of the rear shock adding 3mm to its length. Being a 45 degree shock, this raised the rear quite a bit.

Although I have ordered a full set of race glass from Racers Edge, I acquired a solo seat unit cheap from ebay.

The next stage is to decide on a final colour and learn to paint. I am playing with something akin to British Racing Green at the moment... more to follow.

Had a bit of a delivery today, and spent the rest of the day in the shed.

Again the starting point, raised rear, removed pillion pegs & brackets, removed hero blobs from pegs and put new oil in the forks. Static sag set to 30mm.

Then this arrived from Races Edge

The tail unit is really small and will require a few bits to be moved around, but will look great once it's done. Luckily I have another unit (as above), and this fits the rear as it is now. It has been painted but not fully polished yet.

The top half of the fairings went on really easilly, and drilling the holes was far easier than I expected.

The bottom fitted easilly to the top, and stays snug with the supplied 1/4 turn duzz fastners (wire lock type).

Finally the front guard slipped on, although I had to remove the front wheel to get the bolts done up.

Still have to refit the ram air ducts, but apart from that it's done. Will get the painting finished after the track day at PI on June 11th.

Chicks gig guys on pink bikes coz they feel 'safe' around poofs. Me, I'll stick with the plan of British racing green

Looks Great so far Mike.

I think go the black, that way you don't need to worry about painting the tank either!

Too many black bikes at the track, this will make it easier to pick myself out in the photos!

Mick,
are they glass fibre ??
If so.........mix up a bit of 2 part resin from a glass fibre patch kit and put it on the rear of the holes you drilled........trust me mate when you drill thru the fibres it starts to powder and the more you take off & put on the fairings the bigger the holes will get.
5 minutes now and you will save a lot of grief later

Thanks mate, I'll look into that today.

If ya paint the fairing black to match the tank then do the tail kwaka green that will stand out
