Z1000 Suspension mods

Sat Feb 03, 2007 9:09 pm

Ladies and Gents, I'm chasing info on upgrading my standard suspension on my 03 Z thou, both front and rear. I've heard about slotting in a 636 rear setup and utilising a 5mm shim to raise the rear i.e. better turn in. Does any one know of these mods or have done them. Front also. Anyone, anyone?

you need to check out Robracers thread on putting a gixxer front end onto his z750. Its down the page a bit from this one........not *exactly* the same as what you want, but there is plenty of good ideas in there that will apply to your conversion as well.

I've had the left fork modded to equal the right, and I have a zx6 shock in the rear of my 06.

Do it, changes the bike completely.

Don't I count Gos????

Yeah I used to work there.. it used to sit out the side of the building, handy for me to show people bits and pieces for theirs :D

Front fork mods.. there's quite a few different ways to do it, you can put a zx6 front end on it, but finding one seems to be a problem, or you can have the standard ones modified.

Best guy to talk to is steve at suspension improvements in randall st, Slacks creek, he's not cheap, but I think he walks on water :) Prices vary on what you want done to the front. I don't know how you find it but it never liked how the bike would change line mid corner, and bumps upset it, made it feel unstable. They still do to an small extent, but now it feels like it isn't going to let go.

I bought the rear shock off Barrabob (forum member) and threw it in. The standard shock as you know is very pogo stick, the zx6 shock eliminates this.

Now it's really good, the numerous mechanics that have ridden it say you can feel the difference over standard in how it handles, and while it's never going to be as good as a full on sports bike for what it is it's pretty damm good now :D

the z750 and thou's are completely different suspension wise Gos.

Don't forget me again ok :P Maybe I should send you a list of my mods, you'd be surprised :P

And bike is still possessed.. ran good last weekend, then rode it during the week and it was carrying on, and still no definite answer on why it broke down. Have suspicion it's about to do it again though.

Bad time to say Ticketyman you can take it for a spin if you want? :D

you change the "dogbones" not a shim to adjust the ride height.
you may need a shim because the bottim of the shock is sometimes a little bit smaller that the Z one, but this ony is on a few of the ZX636 shocks. not sure fo what year.

check out http://www.riderforums.com

all europe and merica based, but still lots of weirdos that have done "everything"

03/04 straight swap over
05/06 need a little bit of modifying

The 03/04 is a little shorter, but not a great deal..

Looks like I'm chasing a zx6 rear shock, and a chat with Steve. Anybody know of anyone who's selling a shock.

I'll check with the wreckers down the coast and have a chat with pro kwaka.

I'd try http://www.findapart.com.au

Pro kwakka don't have any bits down there that suit what you're after suspension wise.

There's a guy at Brisbane bikers named Matt, he has an 06, he's had his front forks done by Steve and put an ohlins in the rear. If you're after more feedback I'd give him a yell as well.

while you are on your search I believe any aftermarket shock for a 98 zx6 onwards will fit ...brains a bit foggy and you would have to check the length but it does give a lot of options.

5mm is nothing that cant be fixed with spacers and i am fairly sure the shocky that went into my six originally came out of a 7r.

Steptoe from illawarra has a 03-04 shock plus linkages for sale. I take it this would do the job? Also i've got no idea how much to pay, what's the going rate?

this thread shows you what is interchangeable on the z1000 with other bikes, and what mods if any are needed
