When hot the bike sometimes died

2000 zx6r. When the engine is hot it sometimes stutter and dies. Wait few minutes and then ok again.

Thinking it may be heat related -- but even when it goes to higher temperatures it's ok ...

not sure where to start looking... maybe connections, grounds?

Any idea ?

Can you describe the stutter?

Remember the fundamental of a combustion engine... to run it needs 3 things

1. Air
2. Fuel
3. Spark

When is it cutting out? Whilst at revs? when stopped at the lights? when braking?

My '99 used to die in the heat. I found it was a fuel problem when sitting at the lights. Never got to the bottom of it so I wrote it off and got a new bike.

yep they used to do that. if you were back in 2000 now u could ride it in to a green dealer and they wood fit a new set of carbs FOC and it wood be new again, but alas its not and you cant, so best you get a guru to strip and check them carbs.

i had that problem with the 250 and when i changed the spark plugs it worked properly

Close but not quite correct.

The 3 things are : 1 - Fuel, 2 - Spark, 3 - Compression.

Of these 3, the most common cause of all problems is *spark* (electrical), followed by *fuel* (carbies, tap, tank), then finally compression (pistons, rings, valves, etc).


I would start with electrical stuff first, its always worth checking connections, voltages, etc, before you start ripping carbies apart...

Same symptoms for me sporadic engine failure leave it 5 minutes it would start
My issue was the fuel pump seizing and hard to detect as it did not happen often when it cooled down ok again
Worst part is if it is the fuel pump you can destroy a couple of batteries as the curcuit only completes on the starter turning over or the motor running
( so it does not prime prior to turning the ignition on) Does that make sense to you??

Thanks all for the diagnostics ... I think I found the problem. The stator was fried, alas no charge to the battery (or very little -- enough to run). During hot day the fan activated and it drained the battery. Being hot, there is no charge left to power the bike.

When cooled down, the battery is back to normal.

I have fixed the stator and electrical system is stable now (see "stator resistance") thread.
