Good Deal?

Thu Dec 07, 2006 11:14 am

I've always gone for my rides wearing a mesh jacket and draggin jeans cargo pants. However after reading here that mesh garments are not all that good I decided to fork out some dosh for a leather suit, to be used at least for those faster and longer weekend rides. I did all my measurements and have ordered an import from ebay (USA). Did I get a reasonable deal?

for ~$850AUD delivered ($600USD + $75USD for delivery). It must be hard for Aussie companies to compete when you can import so cheaply with no GST or duty as long as the total cost of the import is <$1,000 AUD

i bought all my leathers through the same guy.
so did my brother.

neither of us have ever had a problem with him and he is heaps cheaper than anyone in australia.

it ends up being close to half price (including postage). :D

his delivery is bloody quick too. i ordered a jacket on a thursday morning and it arrived the following tuesday morning.

Looks like a good deal, you just need to be carefull customs don't add there bit to it...
I got caught a couple of years back...

import duty

It's easy to get caught out 'cause the rules change all the time.
Currently, as long as the total value (goods plus freight cost) is < $1,000 then there should be no duty or gst charged. It's the same if you bring stuff in from a holiday overseas. Technically you could get charged gst + duty for that new $1,000+ video camera you buy in Japan. However used items are usually exempt.

I believe that is for goods sent by post, but if sent by courier they attract duty / gst for lower amounts (they did about 12 months ago anyway). Thats how I got stung, they sent the stuff by courier not US post, and the couriers add there processing charge to the costs too...

hahaha so Honda riders are like some kind of idiot savant? Really good at spelling, not good with numbers, have really poor eyesight and are incredibly vain....right, got it :wink:

Just picked up the same suit for the Boy for Chrissie... All Black thou... Got it from a guy that had imported it but it didnt fit properly... Total Cost $900 AUS... don't mind about the extra - I needed it before Chritmas day or he would have nothing to open...

I had a look at the same suits at Pro Honda yesterday and they had $1649 (I think or $1549 or something along those lines) on them... So I am very happy with the purchase...

That is a good deal. Most places want around the $1400+, as i was looking at the same suite.

As for the issue of bringing imports in i had duty free(max. limits) and various little things from Germany, plus my leather suite. The total could :roll: have been over the limit but the jacket couldn't fit in the suite case so i carried it on the plane as hand lugage. It had also been worn the day before i left, so tech. speaking it had been used therefore exempt, same with the alcohol last time 4 bottles 2 of them had been open so they didn't count. And that was customs that ad advised me :shock:
