TIGHT Sprocket

Mon Oct 16, 2006 9:50 pm

Is the front sprocket on a 1996 ZX-7R left handed or right handed. Damn it's tight

its a normal thread. Last time I saw a LH thread was the front wheel nuts on a VC Valiant

You might need some help with an air-wrench to get it off. Or a 3' length of waterpipe on the end of the socket handle is also a good option..

I keep a 900mm long breaker bar in the garage
for when the rattle gun...can't budge it

If the front sprocket hasnt been changed for some time, you may find it incredibly difficult to move. A lot of people fear stripping the nut as it's so tight often. As others have suggested, if you do not have a rattle gun, get hold of some form of extension for the socket ratchet, lock the bike in gear, and sometimes if it's really tight you may have to stand on the rear brake as well to stop it turning the wheel. (If you're co-ordinated it's manageable with one person, otherwise enlist the help of friend, sibling or one of your ofspring depending on your situation!

also put something in there to penetrate the threads to help it budge. inox or penetrene. i used an electric rattle gun and had it almost stalling while i tried to crack the seal to rotate the nut off. Got it off eventually, but it was a right bitch to do. Cleaned the thread up with a brass brush and wd40 afterwards to make sure i got all the shit off there so it'd not screw up next time.

and then you put LocTite on the thread
to make sure it won't come orf.... :D

nah thats what the bendable washer was for afterwards!

id be worried if the three tabs all decided to bend down simultaneously

yea undo the nut BEFORE u cut the chain...other wise its difficult to stop the sprocket turning...

good luck...not a hrd job...if everything goes smoothly...

Some ass had covered the entire thread on mine with loctite, with assistant hard on the brake and 1m pole over the socket bar thing it wouldnt budge (socket bar thing has 90deg bend in it now too)

Took it into mechanic, rattle gun couldnt do it, had to leave it with him.

Eventually got it off in a not very nice way involving a big hammer and big shifter :o
But it wasnt budging any other way.

Also theres a folding washer (on mine anyway) so check you have bent that back down.

I heat up the thread first to soften the loctite.

if its tht bad..to avoid stuffing threads and possibly doing other damage
i would use a nutsplitter... roots the nut ( a new one is cheap)
but its easy to get off :)
