Bike running HOT!

Postby mick_dundee » Fri Oct 13, 2006 6:40 pm

Just picked the bike back up from RR, they couldn't find any prob witht he thermo fan, hardly surprises me as unless you actually ride the bike for a bit she remains reasonably ok temp wise.

Thermo fan not working as stated above and could well be the ONLY cause and indeed I certianly hope so, will be sussing it out tomorrow in depth but nay ideas appreciated.

The suggestion of a new bike would sit well if I was a bit more financial, alas i'm not... so, this thing given it's aesthetics and the fact that it's now done >100,000 ks will sell for SFA so i'm looking to ride it into the ground basically.

Of course a working cooling system would help it's longevity enormously...

If it's the same as a zx6r the sensor in the radiator closes a contact to turn on the fan when hot. These can die as did mine. Test it by removing the plug and shorting its two pins. The fan should spring into life. :)

We usually get Adelaide's weather the day after you blokes, so yeah, it has been hot but not THAT hot tonight and previously have run this thing in 40 degree days with no cooling probs, also given the thermo fan doesn't run, that points to be a prime suspect.

AUssie, how expensive/easy is it to fix (if that's the prob) and do I take it to a radiator dude or an auto sparky?

If it unscrews from the radiator, pull it out, go buy a new one.

My one was $76. Accept I fitted a switch I had lying around for free instead. I prefer it because if you can see traffic turning to crap you can turn the fan on before the bike gets stinking hot. :)

That's correct Kaz, that's because it's all boiled up into the overflow... now assuming RR have replaced coolant and they said they did, then thermo fan must be my problem child.

- check fluid level, not from the reservoir only but open the cap on the radiator as well

- check the radiator cap. The fluid needs pressure to have high boiling point. If old, replace it anyway for $8 (BP servo)

- check whether the fan is working (I thought you had it switched?)

- check fan switch

- most difficult: check thermostat
