Bad experiences with bike shops? well let's put it this way.... I'd rather burn my bike than take it anywhere near a bike shop... Ofcourse a 5 year TAFE course helps lol 8)

I realise you didn't ask me directly, but for me it went like this... I looked at the bike, I looked at the tools my Dad had pilfered from the factory when it shut down, I looked at the bike again, said to myself "How hard can it be?" and started unbolting stuff.

Haven't had a rod come through the cases yet, and with the money I save in mech fees, I manage to keep a second bike on the road.

Ultimately, given how easy it is to do most mechanical work, how much advice and wisdom is available at boards like these, there's no excuse for leaving your servicing to a dealership workshop.

Its cool that you can do the work yourself, i can do minor works myself too, but i personally don't have the time or the tools, ie vacuum gauges a dyno machine etc etc etc to do mechanics work myself.

It also depends how festideous you are about your maintanance. I keep my ride in top nick, and prefer the piece of mind in having a trusted mech do my servicing regularly.

So saying 'theres no excuse for leaving your servicing to a dealership' is a pretty irrelavent comment.
