Criekey! Steve Irwin's dead

Mon Sep 04, 2006 2:29 pm

Apparently he was filming a thing on the barrier reef this morning and somehow got impaled through the chest by a sting ray.

Television personality and environmentalist Steve Irwin has died in a marine accident in north Queensland, state government sources say.

The 44-year-old is believed to have been killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, the sources said.

He was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas when the accident occurred.

Mr Irwin's body was being flown to Cairns by helicopter.

Australian emergency officials could not immediately confirm the reports.

Irwin won a global following for his daredevil antics but also triggered outrage in 2004 by holding his then one-month-old baby while feeding a snapping crocodile at his Australian zoo.

It is believed his American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania.

damn that is some crazy news! As irritating as he could be to us Australians, he did wonders for Aussie tourism!

Gotta agree with you there Swabio, not a massive fan of the bloke but did have a passion for Australia and it's wildlife.

Should have put a disclaimer inthe topic heading that this has nothing to do with motorbikes so Duane knows he need not read it :D

No need to be a smartarse. however, I feel sorry for his kids (one would barely be older than a year), but if you live by the sword...

However, i'd have a problem with the thread if it said we better ban documentarys because people die.

Perhaps not ban docos but if we can ban stupidity.... concur with the above too, sorry for the kids but if ya gonna go around hugging shit that's dangerous there is a reasonable chance that one day it's gonna bite ya back, in this case it was a fatal bite...

if we banned stupidity, where would we put everyone??

Stupidity is subjective. How can you ban something that is subjective?

I feel sorry for his wife, he has died and she doesn't know about it yet,
According to the news she is trekking in Tas, and has not yet been informed. (no phone coverage)(but i would say they would take satalite phones as they could afford it)

I hope with all the money they have the charter a helicopter and go get her.

RIP Steve i still remember the day you smiled and said to me Crickey mate keep her under control  I was holding a a baby croc no longer then 45cm long with it's mouth tapped.

Bugger... :(

Mon Sep 04, 2006 5:10 pm

Seems odd the poor bugger getting done by a stingray. Had the headline read "Crocodile Hunter gets swallowed by Croc" or Killed by Snake etc you'd probably go "Oh well that's a fair cop".

RIP Crocodile man.. :(
