went for a ride today on my 98 ZX9R with the mrs on her 02 954RR

i can say with absolute certainty that the blade's chassis is leaps and bounds ahead.... however it should have been fitted with a steering damper from the factory (mrs has a bling scotts rotary damper on hers)... although i can appreciate my bike having absolutely no need for a damper... with the throttle about 3/4 open in first and the front wheel only just touching the tarmac it will headshake lightly but thats it... let go of the throttle and its business as usual.. hers was hella flighty before the damper but now its well.... perfect really feels like a 600, so easy to throw around

my suspension isnt set up 100% perfectly, but hers is just so much more compliant than mine... we went for a blast up to mt macedon and the roads are pretty bumpy and for the first time ever i just couldnt quite keep up with her tho my bike wasnt giving me any confidence to try to

hers is fairly stock with a BMC filter and micron slip on with no tuning... definately has a bit more go below about 4-5k, and perfect throttle response everywhere (actually a little bit too good when cracking the throttle open a touch from fully closed really upsets the bike, maybe a PC3 could help)...

in a straightline how ever my bike definately has more from 5k to redline, but mines not stock with a full akra system, +4 advancer, demeshed air filter, jetkit tuned to perfection by yours truely and +1 on the rear sprocket... tho my power is very linear, just gets stronger and stronger with the revs where hers has quite a punch down low thanks to the valve in the exhaust, the extra 55cc and EFI... which means her power is more usable out of corners... how ever on a long sweeper i feel i can put more power down on my bike than on hers, even kick the rear out a bit maybe its the long wheelbase helping out there

the 954 has a much better turning circle too and feels about 100kg lighter when your pushing it

hard to say which bike is comfier too, the short reach to the bars on the 954 is nice, long journeys i get some pain in my lower neck on the 9R... my seat is definately softer, but hers is a little wider...

in terms of vibrations mine seems a little more smoother..

certainly no trouble starting a bike with EFI either, almost had to push start the ninja today after sitting dormant since friday but the tune isnt quite perfect yet (choke rarely helps cold starts) and my battery is a bit average

oh and hers is only about 10% as crashed as mine


edit: forgot about the brakes.... once again, worlds apart... the discs on the 954 are huge, and with about 20kg less weight they really work well... where mine, even with braided lines i cant get a firm feeling from the lever no matter how much i bleed them... but to be fair, my discs desperately need to be machined, very glazed and burnt

ahh i love this place.... this blokey bloke stuff is keeping me on my toes....

as stated before..i rode the 01 zx9r...and 00 cbr929... and its common knowledge which one i bought (im not so popular anymore..mwahahaha)

but the blade is a nice bike...

929's must be pretty weak if a 954 aint exactly scary

oh one other thing....

for the same reasons that the 954 turns quicker than the 9R, the 9R is a traffic light demon in comparison longer wheelbase makes getting off the line too easy on the 9R even with less power down low....

where the 954 is a tricky one to launch thanks to its ultra sensitive throttle and very light front end! the 9R just encourages you to push harder and harder, its wheelies are very friendly in comparison

Yeah Dangerous Dave has dibs on hanging a few wheelies on the 9 once I get it registered!!! He likes a little extra length in the wheelbase. reckons it makes the 200 KPH stand ups a little less breezy, and a little smoother!!! Sick bastard he is!!!

yeah, the shorter wheelbase bikes like blades, r1's, gixxers etc... can produce a lot in the way of unexpected wheelies...

where the 9R you have to want to wheelie to pop it up, but at the same time they can be fairly effortless

wont really power wheelie in 2nd gear, occasionally pops up, or if i go over a crest with the throttle pinned and the revs in the sweet spot rolling the throttle on in first has some really wild accelleration if you control the throttle enough to keep the wheel on the ground... just absolutely launches forward its the busa of the sub litre class

as mentioned the 954 has snatchy throttle

easily fixed with a PC

suspension , damper required

both easy fixed with a few hundred bucks spent on suspension setup, money that is quickly returned through longer tyre life besides the fact of a far better riding bike

a near new blade for the price of an old ZX9 , really a no brainer IMHO

at 40K your ZX9 is on the rapid downhill run to worth 2/5ths of fuckall in the general publics perception

954's are still going for 10-12k, perhaps the least depreciating, mass produced jap sports bike of the last 20 years


9R's are bargains...especially C-models

benny fixed his blade up and traded it because he couldn't get a bite on it. ended up getting $8000 for it

admittedly, if anyone knew what it had been through, they wouldn't go near it with a 10 foot pole, but as a testament to the honda tuffness, you wouldn't have known after the plastics were all replaced.

the honda tuffness.... well this bike got stacked more often than ben had ciggy breaks. the crash cage that he had on it had to be cut off it was that bent up, the plastics from top to toe were completely munted, he bent 2 12 bars and never had to replace the subframe. it was about as messy as a bike can get without damaging anything serious. he picked up a new set of farings, a subframe and a front wheel, whallah, spankin new blade


tuff as nails, i dont think 954s die, i just cant fathom what would be needed to break one of these

i guess they go hard too..... weighing 1/2 of fuck all and having ~150hp at the wheel with a slipon.....

they do about 135rwhp stock, little more with a slip on... about 145rwhp tops with a nice full system and tuning, they aint no gixxer

is that why a few of the aus superbike boys mounted 954 donks in their older 01 929 chassis for the 03/04 race season??

apparently ..so its been said..the 954 had a better donk/box..but the 929 had a better handling package....

i wouldnt kno..but u talk of how tame a 929 is..then u comment on the 9r as the "busa of the litre class"....hahahaha
