Cool Carbs ZX7R

Today I had massive power loss on a ride with
the lads and ladies outa Melbourne and flames
coming outa the zorst apparently . Is Carb iceing?
and the fix/mod is....?
(I know science has discovered fool injection, but
love and poverty was discovered first.)

If the symptoms are as follows then yes it is.........

Even throttle, for a long time, in cool damp conditions may manifest itself with the bike intially dropping back to three, then eventually stalling altogether.

Fixes are.
1. Go so slow that the wind chill wont ice them.
2. Go so fast that the high revs will keep the motor warm enough to heat the carbs.
3. Find a carburattor heater kit from a wrecked ZX7R at the wreckers for fcuk all.
4. Find loads of cash equivelent to the national debt to buy a new one from Kawasaki.

On v cold morning on Putty, unexpected mist etc from a cold snap. freezing for a bush boy from Qld.
The 7 cut out below 5000rpm, then 6, then 7, then 8.
An interesting ride to the next servo where I sat 'til the mist lifted.
There was a few bikes there
The de ice kit (?) runs hoses around the carbs from the cooling (heating ) system.
Dont know how closing off the air intakes would work but as Kwak went to the hoses one would guess they tried it.

The ex's ZX6R did the same at Toowoomba (welcome to Sunny Qld ) and it did just as Strika described above.

Mate something else to be aware of is the fuel pump,my engine stalled a couple of times in the last couple of weeks and had to push start it the last time,took it to get a look at and was told zx6r & zx7r of this age(yeah 96 is old...) had fuel pump seizing problem.

My '98 ZZR600 suffers from this, later models have the carburetor de-icing plumbing that mine lacks. The 2000-model water pump I bought earlier this year (last year?) from a wrecker had the hose fitting and I was going to work out out how to update mine, but alas I lost interest. Now I can't be stuffed doing anything about it .

The guys in the States on the Ninja 250 group that I used to frequent used to block off part of the radiator grill (I presume the top part) with cardboard to restrict the amount of freezing air getting through to the carbs. The also has the benefit of allowing the bike to approach normal running temperatures in sub-zero air...

...just remember to take it off in summer .

..so Smitty are you gonna tell em we still have a "choke" on our ummm EFI bikes or me......

My solution is if it is cold. pull up for a coffee and stay there til the sun comes out.

I know Arthur very well too Frogz. He's been at my place all fungin winter!!!!!! I hate Melbourne winters!!!! Yesterdays ride was awkward. My right wrist got stuck in one position for most of the ride. Well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it...your worship

I have had the similiar problems to what buck had yesterday. Funnily it seems to be a random thing...like I was riding behind Buck and my 7 wasn't affected...however his 7 was. Maybe it was the flames comin out the zaust warmin' the air .... On the last ride thru the spurs my 7 was affected Buck's 7 wasn't???

It only seems to occur when there is cold air or mist around. Like I rode the spurs over three different days in a week and it happened at different places along the route but always when it was cold or damp???

The bike feels and sounds like it's running on 3 or 2 cylinders and clears if you coast and give it a few revs but depending on the conditions returns again quickly. If you stop and allow the heat to sink thru everything for a while, it usually starts with a bit of an effort and coughs and carries on and then it clears and runs ok.

I was thinking that some sort of ducting from just behind the headers and pointed at the carby bodies might be a help???? Dunno. Some cars have this same sort of ducting except they generally duct it into the air cleaner and they have a cold air flap on the nose of the air cleaner to block the external cold air.

Be interesting to have warm air funneled into the air box system and then block off the front intakes. Dunno that it would be a good idea to block off the air volume into the carbies without an alternative air source because that could affect performance badly...I'm guessing. Maybe warm air ducted, in a reasonable size ducting, into the air box from near the headers and then the front ducts blocked off, might fix the problem. Be interesting to see.
