Bank warns on email scams

July 25, 2006 03:52pm
Article from: AAP

COMMONWEALTH Bank customers are being targeted by an email scam attempting to elicit details of their bank accounts.
The bank today told customers it never uses email to seek account information as it issued a warning on what it called a "sophisticated" scam.

The fake emails being circulated randomly around Australia claim to be from the Commonwealth Bank and urge recipients to log on to a fake internet banking service.

The scam asks customers to fill in a survey in return for a $25 reward, which is promised to be credited to the customer's bank account.

Operators will then use the information to attempt to capture a customer's NetBank client number and password.

"At no time does the bank contact customers by email or telephone to seek bank account or personal information or offer financial rewards as inducement to provide personal and bank account details," Michael Cameron, group executive of the Commonwealth's Retail Banking Services, said.

"The bank takes the issue of protecting customer funds and personal information from unscrupulous thieves very seriously and for this reason thought it important to warn consumers of the sophisticated attempts to obtain their personal information."

The bank has asked all customers to log on to NetBank by entering the NetBank address netbank.com.au directly into their web browser.

It advises customers to immediately delete any email they receive claiming to be from the bank.
