Brake fluid

Postby javaman » Wed Jun 07, 2006 3:30 pm

What brake fluid do you use ?

I bled my brakes using Castrol Response and felt bit of resistance from the rubber when pressed hard. Not to convinced that the fluid caused this, I ignored it until I bled my car's clutch system and got the same feel :?

I know dot-4 fluids are supposed to be compatible... but!

Planning to re-bleed those brakes and clutch this weekend

I chucked a Dot 5 (Silicone based) in when I did my braided lines but because I did the lines as well I have no idea whether it's better or worse. Supposedly Dot 5 isn't hydroscopic so doesn't absorb moisture (I suspect the benefit of this is more designed to convince you that $25 for brake fluid is OK).

It is a very pretty purple though

Did you use a 4L or a smaller container of brake fluid?
If it's 4Litres, make sure you havent got that dodgy castrol stuff in there that isnt brake fluid, is it a red or grey container? it should be red, if its grey, flush it out IMMEDIATELY.

Glen, i've been told that the fluid is different in the way it reacts with things like rubber as well, i dont know how much truth and how much hype is in that statement.

I use the Motul dot 5.1 and find it does work better than dot 4. I use to get bad brake fade in my 9 until I swapped to this. Still got fade but not as bad.
Can't tell if its much different in the 10 as I put the dot 5.1 in the same time as the braided lines.
The Motul costs about $18.......

oh, and another advantage of the dot 5 is, it doesn't stuff your paint...

Not sure about 5.1..??

Thanks guys... So Motul it is :)

I'm gonna stick with DOT4 though as it is the recommended specification.

DOT 4 is poo.

Upgrade to the better stuff (RBF600).
Everyone i have recomended it to loves it. And now they wont go back.

Yeah i here you say that its not the recommended spec. But do you use recomended tyres, run recommended pressures, most of us here service the damm bikes more that the recommended intervals!
Just cause its recommended does not mean there not better out there.
