i could picture a BMC or K&N filter having similar flow rates to the stock item with the mesh removed, but being much better at stopping dirt getting into the engine... the K&N and BMC being cotton, the stock being foam

If you have plenty of headshake I would be dodging the QuickActionThrottle until you get the bike SORTED better.
