First to second is usually clunky, oil/clutch adjustment and chain tension all play a part. I always find gear changes get rougher towards the service interval (old oil)and occasional missed gear when chain is loose.
Sometimes it's just about getting the revs right. A change at 3500rpm may be a bit harsh, but at 4000 it's better. Try playing with that and see it you can find a sweet spot
