Fuel injection 9

Postby zedx » Fri May 26, 2006 10:08 pm

I am looking at getting a Z1000 motor and useing the fuel injection on my 2003 zx9r. Is this possible? i am also looking at getting a big bore kit? Which one would be better , the big bore kit or use the Z1000 motor with the zx9r head and cams? :D

i wouldnt bother with any Z1000 parts on a ZX9R.

at the end of the day, the motor is inferior and makes less ponies, even with more capacity and injection :P softer cams and lower compression will do that tho. as will (smaller) side draft throttle bodies, compared to the 9's downdraft carbs... which is another reason why the Z1000's entire intake setup wont fit, the head is completely different

if you want more power, then grab a big bore... there are plenty on the market... have a look on kawiforums as there are a few threads there in the ZX9 section on the topic.. theres even a ~1050cc kit for sale there right now  brand new never used and the guy wants about us$2k for it

otherwise muzzy make a 998 kit, zlock have a kit, so do wiseco and some others too... keep hearing bad things about the muzzy 998, but then there are only happy 998 owners on kawiforums

muzzy recon you'll make 160hp at the wheel with a full system & jetkit and their 998 kit, with stock carbs & cams..

MrTurbo make a EFI setup to go with their ZX9R turbo kit, tho your looking at about us$5k for all that.. thats the only EFI kit for a ZX9R im aware of tho

if you wanna get tricky then maybe you could hook up a microsquirt setup... they go for about us$350.

you would need to adapt your own EFI hardware to it tho (injectors, fuel rail, fuel pump, regulator, coolant temp sensor, intake air temp sensor, MAP sensor)... possible you could leave the stock carbys in place and just seal up the fuel lines & carb vents... maybe even leave the vacuum pistons in place (i know the first EFI R1s had them for smoother throttle response) or hollow them out... at least this way you wont lose the stock ram air effect, and the stock carbs have a throttle position sensor on them already.

problem is, most tuners wont know how to get the most out of it.. and most tuners are monkeys who can only do what they have only been shown to do :x

SS is bang on the money Alex from LAE was involved in tuning/dynoing such a mod to a 9 & it produced less ponies then the normally aspirated zx9r. After a sh1tload of time & money was wasted on it.

im actually very interested in setting up EFI on my 9...

megasquirt is the way to go, or even microsquirt (same thing but smaller)

along with a set of throttle bodies (including TPS, injectors, fuel rail and regulator) off another EFI bike... but which bike is the question!

this thread is very useful on the matter:

http://www.msefi.com/viewtopic.php?t=6627

pics and specs on just about every EFI bikes throttles... and if you look on ebay international searching for "throttle bodies" you would be supprised at how many are for sale! pretty cheap too, $100-150us seems to be the going rate for throttle bodies & injectors with fuel rail and regulator 8)

food for thought.
