ZX7R give me a tap to start HELP!!!!

Postby Burky » Tue May 09, 2006 11:50 pm

This prob is a painfull one. Key in reds on start button pressed then CLICK from the relay! Pop seat off reds on start button pressed, tap junction box and hey presto!! Now this happens now and then when you least expect it, all connections have been checked/cleaned all good then it happens again. Then for weeks it's OK than again. Has anybody had this happen before or heard of it happening? The bike is a 96 ZX7R. Any info would be handy :? :(

hmmm, i had problems similar to that in my old car......a vn dunnydoor! I replaced the efi relay, and presto all fixed......it seemed the relay just wanted to work when it felt like it! Perhaps your relay is near on rooted, and works intermittently?

often relays can come apart, they are simple critters, insulated top area that the high amp cables bolt to on top and two lower voltage connectors towards the bottom. ones ive mucked with have the top held on by screws, just undo them, take it apart, clean the copper contacts up a bit and make sure theres grease in the right spots and you should be right. Often there is pitting on the connectors and the current allowed through gets less and less until eventually it just falls over and fails to start.

Geez! Is that English?? :? I've got a '97 model 7R which'll only start with the clutch pulled in, but I'm not sure if your problem is related in any way because I can't understand ya! You soun like Starvin' Marvin from Southpark!!

oh btw if your tapping the junction box as opposed to the starter relay, then could it be a dodgy connection somewhere? *thinks about possibilities*

bluefly, what you've got is an "interlock" to stop you doing anything stupid.
On my bike the bike has to either a) be in neutral (clutch in/out = irrelevant) or b) be in any gear with the clutch in.

<rant>This morning i had to f#(&*$ing roll start my bike as my battery is a touch farked and barely cranked over</rant>

Not sure about the 96+, but the ZXR has a relay built into the junction box you're talking about.

Cheers,

Nope. Matt had been riding Randy for a week or so and was having to push start him. I jumped on one Saturday, Matt's standing beside me, ready to take over and push-start down the driveway. I pull in the clutch like I usually do and start him up no trouble! Don't know why I always pull the clutch in, just a habit I've unconsciously developed I guess. But neither of us can figure out why he'll only start like that...?? I don't mind as long as he starts!

Make sure all your wires have good connections to the battery.
My 7 did this and it was corrosion on the terminals.
Sort of like a flat battery as power is "weak".
It does the same if the battery is going flat (it sits a fair bit since I got the 12  ).
Clean the terminals and make sure the bolts are tight.

Might not be anything to do with it, but its worth a go....
Just because you CAN ride, doesn't mean you SHOULD
