zx7r - 9r conversion ..... help! lol

Postby 99coconuts » Fri Apr 07, 2006 9:57 pm

well, not content with just having my bike run, and run half decently, i now want to have a crack at doing some pretty major work.

first off, and this will be more of a deciding factor than anything else - will a 99 zx9r motor fit in my 99 zx7r frame? all the guides and tips i can find are all for 94-96 zx9 motors :? i'm CERTAIN someone here must know this, you've known everything else (IK, i'm looking in your direction  )
i ask this because i have found a complete 99 zx9r in a mate of a mates garage and he's selling it for a very reasonable price (more reasonable than i can find an earlier one for)

next up, i'm gunna need some SERIOUS help with this. i've read through a couple of guides and it doesn't seem ridiculously hard, but these guides may not help much if a 99 motor is too much different from an earlier one :? has anyone seen a guide for this that they might be able to point me in the right direction for? and would any of the super tech heads here be interested in giving a helping hand? my fridge and spirit shelves are always well stocked and i really am super company

and lastly, i'm gunna have a LOT of leftover parts if this goes through. expressions of interest on any of the leftover bits would really help me make up my mind

cheers guys, any thoughts will be greatly appreciated....

The 98 + motor doesnt't fit as it is wider and fouls on the frame.. I believe.

cheers mate, that seems to be the general jist of it when i've looked alsewhere :? ahwell, had to ask, the deal is pretty sweet with this bloke

next Q then i guess, anyone here want a 99 ZX9R stat write off? far as i know, the bike is complete and running but has a bent but fixable frame. i'll probably still have a look at it tomorrow anyways, so i can give you the full story if you want.

dont quote me on this, but i'm certain we're looking at less than $3k for it....

no good to me, might aswell share eh

There was a 7/9 project bike in an issue of Performance Bikes sometime in about 2002 with a C-model 9 motor in a ZXR750K chassis...

...from memory, some major buggerising about was required. None of the engine mounts lined up, the cylinders sit at a different angle, requiring some tweaking of the frame in the applicable area...

next Q then i guess, anyone here want a 99 ZX9R stat write off? far as i know, the bike is complete and running but has a bent but fixable frame. i'll probably still have a look at it tomorrow anyways, so i can give you the full story if you want.

If it's a stat write off due to a bent frame, there'd want to be precious little else wrong with it for it to be worth near three grand.

Has it actually been written off?

yeah 3k is too much for a stat write off 98/99 9R, considering i got my repairable writeoff for 3k with bugger all damage, full akra system, wave discs, braided lines and lots of balls stickers

saw a repairable write off 98 or 99 9R go for $1700 with fucked forks but everything else pretty sweet

what kinda condition is everything else in? cause i might be up for a few parts if he wants to sell any

Well Coco, if you do find a way to stuff a 9 engine in that monstrosity you call a ZX7R  I may know a certain relative of mine that would be potentially interested in your old engine.

theres a guy in Sydney who has done it. I think his frame was actually a zxr750 not a zx7r, tho I am not sure. the implications would be the same. i think he calls himself Extreme Creations? he put a GSXR1000 rear end on my mates 91 GSXR 7/11. And he does very nice work, I must say.

oh, and the engine was a C model. Not one of the earlier B engines which were based on the zxr750 crankcase...

i was certain i'd heard of a late model 9 motor being stuffed into a ZXR750 or ZX7R frame at some point, but i dont remember any details. i'm happy to go with your info there IK, straight in the 'too hard' basket it goes

with the price, i did say under $3000, i've been told a lot less, but i didn't want to presume that he'd sell it for that elsewhere. better to be told its less than you expected than more yeah?

condition of the thing.... not real sure, didn't get around to seeing it and the bloke is about to piss off for a while. from what i've been told, it was in the process of being turned into a trackbike. how far into that it went, i have no idea :? it IS a stat write off tho, no re-register for this bike.

Hemi, i was going to ask you if you wanted it before i went ahead and sold it elsewhere  we really gotta talk about moving closer to each other new_rofl.gif

thanks for the help everyone, looks like its back to plan A: sitting around half arsedly looking for an early ZX9 motor and then probably spending even more time letting that gather dust before dropping it in

I'm just waiting for someone to do something radical like drop a 750cc 4cyl motor in an ER-5 and whack twin discs on the front and Ohlins all round...

Oh, wait...there is the ZR-7...

I bought the last of the ZXR750 models, Stat write off for $400.00. Its slowly turning into a track weapon. Unloaded the Engine for $800.00. Bought another written off ZX9 B3 from a mate and am going to fit that engine to the ZXR frame. So far all measurements seem to be adding up.

I'll be interested to hear how you go, If you go ahead.

Tell me about it. It could work too, we could continue to swap and trade parts and electronics unhindered by transport logistics, further modify and bugger our bikes, and our respective missus' could spend all day chatting about premmie babies and other girly stuff like tampons and recipies and clothes dryers or whatever it is they talk about..... 8)
