I'm picking the bike up in the morning sulli, I will ask Pete what the $2000 gets me, he builds race engine for the moto cross boys and has his own dyno so he should know what he's doing.

i must admit if it is just a case of replacing the big ends and not rebuilding the entire engine i prolly would give it a go, can't get much worse!

Mate, even if it cost you $4500. 00 to rebuild, you still have a dirt cheap fairly current model ZX6R track weapon!!!!

The do it ya self option is always good and personally I'd give it a go, but if someone else fixes it you may get some warranty....at worst if they fuck something up...they payto get it right....not you!!

After a $2000 engine rebuild my 9 shat itself after 3 track days. Obviously the mechanic denied any wrong doing and either blamed me or some of the non std parts as the problem.. they didn't care they just weren't taking responsability.
Sooo I figured it would be of no use letting them look at it to see what was wrong as they already made there position clear.
Especially after it first started mucking up and they just butched it up to get rid of me.. (valves needing re-shimming after 2 track days.??? and grinding down shims as they didn't have the right size.???)
I took it to someone else who fixed it up and they flatly stated who ever it was that did the rebuild was an idiot and didn't seat and set the valves up properly. Hence the need for ANOTHER brand new set of valves.!!
and the original rebuild was done by a very well known western sydney performance shop....

They offer racers warranty - if it breaks, you keep both parts.!

BTW, I did vote you should rebuild it.. Just cause I got screwed, doesn't mean you should.....

Glenn Rebuild the Sucka then put the new/rebuilt motor in your Roadie & swap put the good old used motor into your Trackie. It's a bit more mucking around but I think it will be a better option. I'm still jealous 4k -4.5k for a "Barra Trackie" is a bargain.

Seeing as it's a track bike, it's going to be under extreme load alot of the time. I would suggest nothing less than a full blue-print (essentially checking all tolerances and measurements) of the bottom end. If they are willing to do it for $2000, then go for it. But if they are just going to replace big end bearings for $2000 (and are not willing to supply you with all the relevant blue-print sheet info) then don't bother as it will only break again.

DIY bottom end rebuilds for a track bike are a helluva issue. I'd be surprised if you could do it for less than $2000 unless you already have a internal micrometer set, vernier guage, cylinder/bore guage, rod-stretch gauge (not necessary but highly recommended) and a telescoping dial-guage. Even then you still have to pay for the machining, balancing, bearings, rings, lube etc.

okay okay I'm thinking of clearing some space on my work bench and having a crack at rebuilding the engine, can't be any worse eh?

I talked to the bloke at shop when i got bike back, and basically he'd build up engine and what it cost would be what it cost...ie if it needs more parts or labour expect it to go way over $2000....so stuff that.

I've rebuilt engines before....just not so tiny or sophisticated....
