Z900 - Z1000 Old Fogey's Thread

Wed Mar 08, 2006 6:27 pm

Does this surprise you ?? Of course not...... :D :D

Thought I'd kick off our new 'Bike Specific' forum with a thread about the Big Grandaddy Superbike of them All.

I could fill this thread with 1billion stories (conservative estimate) of my life and times on either z9's or zthou's, but would love to hear from any other ageing rockers who really appreciate *class* and *style* that was unimaginable in 1972.......

So if you have any good pictures / stories / incriminating evidence, bung 'em up here.......

I'll kick off with one of my favourite bikes.........

Damn I was born in 1972! Can only guess how good those old Z9/Z1000s were.....My slightly later Z440 and Z550GT are pretty kewl....

Very funny coincidence! I saw a mint Z1A (the one with the dark green paint and light green/yellow/whatever that colour is stripe on the tank n tail) cruising along on the other side of the road. I will ALWAYS love old bikes, just like I love old cars (particularly Mopars in case you haven't heard), and they are among the best.

Oh and I just threw out an old Z1 900 frame yesterday too, but fear not; it was shagged. Had two of the top tubes cut off, plus sundry other bits and pieces, including part of subframe.

As a total fan of Kawasaki Z1 900's i almost chuck a chubby at the sight of a good Z1, no bike today even comes close, guess thats why over the years over 40 of them have lived in my garage at one time or another.

Here is a man who wants a modern bikes power and handling and has bastardised a classic to achieve it.
I hope the turbo works because the rest of it is crap. Why the mono shock? I you wanted to *update* the handling then just get a bike that was made with 1 rear shock, they work AND look better.

I hate these tarted up attempts to make a classic *better*

The red velvet is the motif for the whole xercise - misguided and tasteless - IMO of course.

On the other hand .. mmmm H1

Whoa up there big fella....take a vitamin & return to ya seat  If you would like 2 kno more......I suggest you ask b4 just assuming or gobbing off  The guy has owned it since 1976 or 78....how many cycles have you kept for that long?????? After many hours of enjoyment in original condition, he bought another, then another & so on & so forth, but could not bear to part with the old girl...TRUE PRODUCT LOYALTY if you ask me.
Anyways he blinged a bit of this & that, mainly motor stuff, & he found himself at surfers drag strip (yes u young whipper snappers, the gold coast used to have a drag strip that didn't involve men dressed in womens cloths)
This was the reason for the so called bastardisation of the rear end with a single shock extended swingarm etc. The man has rebuilt the thing countless times, spent thousands of dollars, & shed a few tears too no doubt over the years, because he loves this bike....always has, always will, but with a comment along the lines of " If ya want a single shock bike, why not just update to one" I guess you just wouldn't understand now would you  Not every1 has the money to just get sick of sumthing & go trade up the next day... M8 I'm not real keen on the seat either, but when someone has put as much time money & effort into 1 bike for over twenty years, I give credit where its due.
Your completly entitled to your opinion, but get sum backround info before ya just start shooting off at the lips...
ps if ya look hard enough you can see a standard (apart from paint)Z9 in the backround.....& even tho this was a PURPOSE BUILT drag bike, it was street registered till a few months ago.
