Lane Splitting/Filtering to be illegal....

You can bet the states will jump on this. Once someone gives them the idea they'll roll with it and all of a sudden it'll be specifically illegal rather than a discretionary offence.

Taking a stand now is the best chance we've got, even if it is only a small one. If anything I think lane splitting should be specifically legalised in circumstances and then included in state training & licensing programs (for bikes AND cars) so that it is common knowledge and people understand how to do it safely.

Its illegal in NZ and people still do it all the time...

Next thing they will be telling us what underwear we have to wear and we all have to have yellow helmets with flouro plastic pants fffff ***## barstads

A good read, it approaches the issue logically. One interesting thing i like is how it compares motorbikes to pushbikes in that you cant legislate for one, without impacting the other & so on so forth. Which is fair enough, as it would be seen as targetting bikes if it was just us, but would screw over pushy's for various reasons as well.

I don't know how many cops are about where you live but in brisbane there are 2000 sworn police officers for a population of over a million. Now take out the water police, the ones sitting in police stations, the headquarters, the ones in court that day, those investigating break and enters, those in the major crime squad, "those at home asleep/on holiday/rostered off, etc, etc, and you don't have a whole lot of cops patrolling the roads. Hell, I see more billboards with cops on them in a day than I ever see cop cars.

Yesterday while I was out running in the new tire I was caught at the end of a line of 10 or more cars and directly behind me was a cop car "funnily enough" Anyway it was a pedestrian light at a school and there was a mile of room up the inside between the cars and the gutter so at the last minute I pulled out of the que and blipped up the inside and caught the light just as it went green. Now as I lead us all over the crest of the hill a nagging thought came to mind. Wasn't it ILLEGAL to overtake on the inside like that? By the time I got down the hill to the roundabout I had come to the conclusion that it was indeed Illegal, and not wanting to be pulled over by those cops not too far behind me I did a 180 at the round-a-bout and headed back up the hill just as thay crested it and passed me. " a very steep hill it was" Now I don't know if it was me? I doubt it, but the blue lights came on just as we passed each other so when I was out of sight over the hill again I took the first right and "bolted" up a few side streets. Issue resolved

Mind you, I could have just as easily ducked in front of some colourful shrubs, as my bike is a bit of a chameleon as well.

i really hope this stupid piece of legislation doesnt become law

i'll sign an online petition and try and get as many brits to sign too,

the uk Bureauprats would probably grab hold of this law too

online petitions unfortunately mean feck all. its real names on real bits of paper that count, especially if each has its own bit of paper and a nice rational and logical letter before the name.

oh and the higher up the rank from the wanker that dreamed it up, the better.

Dunno that EVERY country is Half but certianly Australia is having a red hot go at it. Holland and Belgium are doing a fair bit to cater for motorcyclists but Holland has long been a country that thinks outside the square a bit, hence the awesome pushbike infrastructure as well as a few other laws that are different from most western countries on earth.

As for making it illegal, it kind of is already, this would just put it in legislation.

Spoke to a friend & her family yesterday arvo, her & her mum are all for the idea of lane splitting, "they are smaller, and its half the fun of them" is the general gist of what was said, a friend of theirs was the opposite, saying she doesnt like bikes splitting past as they should line up like everyone else.

But then again out of the three, my friend & her mum are a bit more like the typical aussie & dont keep a bee in their bonnet (it seemed that their friend did a bit until i mentioned it would help ease traffic a bit more if they went past, which she conceeded to be true, but i think she still doesnt like the idea of it too much).

I saw that latest news on bikepoint.com.au, which is also against the proposed law and reports that even the RACV (a predominantly car-focussed lobby group) has expressed reservations about it.

Yep saw that from the RACV too...yunno who don't like it (lane splitting) at all, the pushbike lobby.

I love cycling and consequentially belong to Bicycle Victoria (sucks in deeply and waits for the comebacks) and much of their political orientation is about keeping motor bikes in a lane so that they dont impinge on pushy spaces.

Couple of pages devoted to why motorcyclists using bike lanes should be killed in the last issue of their mag.

I used to hate cyclists using the road, but the addition of heaps of 'cyclist' lanes up here has seen my attitude soften a great deal.........these lanes are the ducks guts at traffic lights , and I use them all the time.....I can also state that not once, not ONCE have I had a cyclist sharing a cycle lane with me, anywhere, anytime, in the last 4 years....

the other thing the cyclist lobby have achieved up here is the 'painting' of cyclist-specific lanes in *green*. and in these sections, cyclists have right of way over ALL other vehicles......cars, trucks, bus's, ambos, semi-trailers, it doesn't matter, if you are in that cyclist lane at that intersection, you have absolute right of way over every other registration-and tax-paying vehicle in the same intersection........

You would think this would be a nightmare ?? Well it isn't..........simply because the frequency of cyclists actually USING these dedicated lanes is sooooo very small........up here anyway.....

I don't hate pushie riders...........but for a tiny minority of non-paying users, they certainly act as the road does really belong to them........demanding all the rights of road-use ( and a great deal more in some cases), without ANY of the responsibilities of paying their way with either a registration scheme or insurance scheme.......even a small rego fee or insurance scheme would give them *equality* on the road...........imvho
