Dropping a tooth....

Im about to get a new chain and sprockets....

Some people are saying to drop a tooth on the front and add on on the back for better acceleration....

Has anyone done this on a 600?

How much does it affect top speed? (not that it matters all that much)

How much does it affect acceleration?

Does it mean you end up having to change gears a lot more?

down 1 at the front or up two on the back

just means ur doing more revs at lower speed putting u in the powerband quicker

I guess it would affect the speedo right?

Someone was telling me that the front sprockets decide the speedo... so if I only add to the rear I will get the same result but it wouldnt affect the speedo....

Does that sound right? You would think they both affect the speedo...

you can do either
I am a fan of leaving the front sprocket in place and only
playing with the rear sprocket
why??? coz a smaller front sprocket gives the chain a hard time
as it has to go around a smaller diameter...wears the chain and front
sprocket quicker

also
you need to check how the speedo runs..off the front wheel or the
front sprocket

you can calculate the effect if you have a ratio chart
2 extra teeth on the back will drop your top speed 5-8%
and up your revs at 100kmh by roughly the same

How much does it affect acceleration?
2 extra on the back is good..especially around town
off the line acceleration will beats cages easy
the bike will also wheelie easier..if you wanna do that

maybe
some people tend to ride a bike using only a few gears
..they roll on roll off the throttle
others like flinging the lever up and down
really its up to you

I dropped the front by one tooth on the 10 and it was well worth it. It's now the same on the front as the standard for the old 9 was, so I don't think it will have a huge effect on chain life. I put a speedohealer on it as well and calibrated it with a GPS so it's pretty accurate now.

It gets off the line much better than with the standard too-tall gearing, and hasn't caused too many problems with top-speed (other than proving the lie of a fireblade rider's claimed $2.75 ) or cruising on the highway.

Nikos's is up 3 on the rear.

It is supposed to knock the speed down by about 10% apparently.

I went +3 on my '98 6R. Definatley worth it. Just to be nice and legal I fitted a speedo healer at the same time. Feels like an extra 5-10 ponies for the trade off of 500 extra rpm at 60kph and 700 at 100. Top speed is still well above twice the legal limit, so I'm told.

I went -1 on the front for a while mostly while we where doing trackdays at darlington park, makes it pull heaps better out of a lower speed corner but went back to the stock one after that.

You can swap betyween a stock and a -1 to try it out the sprocket was 27 dollars.
