costs comparing 250cc against 600cc

hi everyone, i'm thinking of upgrading my bike, anyone would have a rough idea on how much the $$$$ will make when i switch from a 250cc to a 600cc

in terms of:

Rego
Service
insurance

??????????????????????????

Rego is the same up in Qld.. i think.
Service costs will depend on the number of cyclinders & how big a gun the local dealer puts to your head. Oil is roughly the same, filter may actually be cheaper. Plugs are 14 bucks each tops.
Insurance will be the big difference, depending on the caompany & rating you have. Maybe as much as 3 times what you pay now.

I'm upgrading to a triumph 675 in about may this year, and my insurance last year for my 250 zzr was over $800... my insurance on the 675 is about $1050... fair trade, methinks WAHEY!!! will be watching this thread with interest - what costs have I forgotten about or not thought of? -J.

Insurance can be cheaper - if you're on a risky bike like a CBR250 and trade to something lower risk like a ZZR600 then the price can easily go down. Despite the fact that it's 'fast' and 'expensive' it can still have better claims statistics (everyone crashes or drops their 250, while ZZRs tend to last longer between drops!)

back on topic.... uh, I've never had a 250, but I reckon they get better gas mileage? so a few bucks one way or the other there? Can't be all that big a difference..... like it's been said insurance would be the biggie. glad you approve working again as of tomorrow, so saving up the deposit should be easy peasy - want the graphite one, sex on toast. can't wait... want a couple months getting my sea legs back on Z before I sell him and get the new one, but delivery to australia will be the key to when I get my new ride. can't wait, he's exactly what I want torquey, fast, light, slick, looks japanese..... only thing wrong with it is it's a triumph, but I'll get over that

on a more serious note, call your insurance agency and ask them - they were happy to quote me for a few hypotheticals, and it will give you an idea of longer term costs... also call dealers and ask about service costs... people are generally happy to help if you are friendly and don't waste too much time. remember to say a big cheery thank you -J.

Rego is more in Vic (about $90 from memory, but not completely sure)... Petrol is about $7 more a week...

If you're an old bastard (like me) the insurance is about the same.

Fuel economy from my GPX250R was about (from memory) some ungodly amount like 90mpg, the ZZR600 is about 60mpg.

Service costs are a bit higher, but not a great deal.

I never bought a set of tyres for my GPX as I only had her for 10,000km and the stock tyres are like concrete and wear just as fast. I expect the tyres for the 600 would cost lot more as they are physically bigger, and they do wear out comparitively quickly, but you do have a lot more choice.

dpends...there are plugs and there are PLUGS....if you know what i mean

i used to use the stocker "cr9e" frm memory......cant be farked going to the shed to check......... they were from memory about $12-13. i now use the iridium plus and havent had to change them for nearly 30K...they are more expensive initially but my mechanic - who i have gone to for over 14 years and trust implicitly - reckons they are good for anything up to 40K, at $20 odd each thats good value in my book.

yankee you may want to check the plugs you used arnt c9e's..........no r means no resistor...check to see what is specified for your bike

on another note i clocked over the 100K mark yesterday in nasho, got some photos of the dash clearly saying the mighty 100000.........

rego will prolly be the same
insurance will ikely go up a little - not much.
servicing will go up a little if your 250 is a twin - double the plug, double the carbs, etc
fuel economy will be about the same - bigger engine but doesn't need to rev as much.
tyres will be more expensive though and you'll probably go through them quicker.
same with the brake pads (more expensive AND 2 (normally) for the front)
chain/sprockets are more expensive too, but you'll get the same k's out of them.

Oh, and remember, you'll probably be keeping the 600 longer, so you'll be buying a double bubble, nicer handgrips, clear lenses, braided lines, ohlins shock....

yeah, mine are the "R's" (plugs)... i remember (i think!) when i was doing the whole air filter change, etc. that i'd quickly do the plugs as well. So, on down to the shop to buy the plugs and the dude said, "ninety-three cents each" as he grabbed the little boxes...... and i was like, WOW!!! i had checked the manual before i went and i knew the exact code (that cr9e thing, and i had the old ones which weren't really needing replaced, but you know....) ANYWAY, I reckon (now) the sales guy got it wrong on the day or something, as I have never heard of them this cheap? right?

anyway- congrats on the 100,000 km "mile"stone!!! i was at 53,000km, then it got reset!!! lol!

here's my experiences with insurance cost.

Started with an FZR250 (grey import): $3000+
3mths later i got a zx6r 04model: $2100
12mths later i have an 03 Zthou: $1000

All quoted at rating 2 insuring with suncorp.

Edit: Should mention I am currently 23.
