Note, however, that the guy who serviced the bike is dirtbike specialist. I wouldn't be surprised if balancing the carbs just slipped off his checklist.
Yeah. It's pretty easy to sync a single. They shouldn't have touched them, but what you're describing sound exactly like the floats set too lean.

just sounds like dirty fuel to me. You will need to strip the carbies and clean thoroughly. Change your fuel filter as well.

Only other things that comes to mind is pinched breather tube ? blocked breather in the fuel cap is also worth checking out.

Two heads are better than one (we've proven that before) so I'd be greatful of your help if you've got the time. As importantly, I'd love to borrow your vaccum gauges. What are you doing tomorrow ?

S&W
I can confirm that it *will* rev through the rev range  ...so can the neighbours 10 doors down !

Dan
Tanks been on and off a few times, I don't think the line is pinched.

My best guess has been float levels, but I'd be really interested to know why you picked it, given that my reason hasn't been posted. The reason I suspect the float levels is that, on our driveway (which is reasonably steep) the bike will splutter and stall - this was happening before the *service* so it was discounted to some extent, but it's well and truly back at the top of my list.

What makes you say electrical ? Only interested becuase the reason I went with a fueling problem was that it didn't feel like an electrical issue ... not a good reason, I know, just a feeling.

Everyone else
Thanks for the suggestions, we'll check them all this weekend.

More info
- The problem can be exaggerated significantly by opening the choke
- The spark is good, fat and consistent on all three plugs (OK, four, I was just checking see if you where still paying attention :D)
- Running on reserve makes no difference
- Fuel flow through the tap is fine / consistent when the tank is off the bike

Just wanted to add my thanks too. All the suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I'm looking forwards to learning *a lot* about my bike this weekend!

Will update when the problem is resolved

Good luck Cath, looking forward to the 'How we fixed my bike' update...

one last thing is the check completely disengageing? cable routed correctly? correctly adjusted?

Presumably 'check' was supposed to be choke ? If so, yes, it is completely disengaging and is correctly routed and adjusted. In fact, applying the choke exaggerates the problem.

I picked floats because I've installed a jet kit on my own scoot and the float height has been by far the biggest pain to get right. I started off rich and at one point went too lean and my scoot did exactly what yours does. I've found mine to be sensative to 0.5mm changes.

Dave, do you have extra fuel line to remote the tank ?

Fri Dec 30, 2005 8:32 pm

Awesome, thanks Aus ... I think we'll start with the float levels and a carb balance first thing tomorrow.

Fri Dec 30, 2005 8:38 pm

give your needle/seats a good tub as well, if you are doing the float heights first thing, it would be nice to know that the needle/seats are clean and in good nick.

I suspect I've got enough to knock something up, otherwise I'll duck down to Repco in the morning and grab something (unless you've already got something sorted out ?)

Will do, thanks IvePulledDownAndRebuiltAlmostEverythingDave, your wisdom is appreciated.

Now I've just got to stop drinking, go to bed, and see what tomorrow brings :D

If it is the float I think 0.5 - 1mm should see you right. If you go too rich you'll know it by the big dooee spot about 3-4k.

Mine hasn't been done since the 18K service, and she's on about 47K now.
