Ride types...

Personally I think open to all, but I only know vic.

I also think that if someone wants to organise a Newbie style ride then they should/could use this as a useful means to indicate the pace for the day.

We're prob only talking 1 out of 4 rides that might be specifically targetted for newer riders anyways, and it would by no means change the way things are presently, but simply open things up for people to organise a ride for those people in mind. *shrugs*

As this whole debate was sparked by (a) the unfortunate accident of a newbie, and (b) non-posted newbie rides being organised, it would seem appropriate for *newbie* rides to be identified. Votes cast so far support this.

IMHO, the idea of taking new chums out for 'learning' and 'instructional' purposes is really good, regardless of wether the rides have been posted or not. FFS, if you want to go for a scratch with your mates, just do it. No-one is obligated to post every ride they go on

The key to success is making the process simple. Don't get caught up with 4,5 or 6 'different' gradings/levels, whatever you want to call them, the idea behind my other post was to grade rides, not riders, and to make is as simple as possible - the K.I.S.S principle.......people can make up their own minds if they want to come along........

As I see it , the trick is to get the newbies onto a ride
Once out there, the older/experienced guys (for eg PC me Rob)
can keep an eye on them, give hints and point out errors.

I think the original poster has the responsibility for the where and the when, and should post it in the original post. I don't think any Qld KSRC rides ever exclude newbies, we usually take whoever wants to and is available to go.

If a few of the boys want a quick blat there's nothing stopping them, but personally I'd be hesitant publicly advertise that I was going to be speeding on a particular route at a particular time!

people do organise rides like just like this, its great and should be encouraged, the whole point of the 'Level' thing was just to ensure that people like the poor unfortunate lass who kicked this whole thread off, would take a look at a 'Scratch - Level 3' ride up the 'Spur ( or Mt Nebo, or Chain of Ponds, or Mt Imlay road, wherever), and may say......hmmm, I might give that one a miss, there is a Level 1 ride out to Arthurs Seat the same day, I should go on that.......

Its about balancing the needs of newbies against the *faster* riders, and certainly not trying to *segregate* rides based on who likes who (FFS ) - until the *newbie* becomes a *regular* who no longer needs assistance at this level, as Ronster pointed out, there are now a number of Vic riders who have improved their skills heaps as a result of assistance on group rides.....

if this system can help newbies improve their skills (and equipment), which after all is the whole point of training/assistance, then you can say it has been a roaring success.

I have organised rides up reefton ..for all (and advertised here as such)
the maddies went orf like a scalded cat..'til ½ way and waited
and the rest got there when we did...
and for the newbies and those less experienced
they can say they have done a Reefton ride
without a problem..at their own pace

however
if it was only the maddies for a mad scratch..I would do it by pm or batphone and not public here

I sorta remember the last 'free for all' which was publicizied to also include outsiders... who ignored/did not know our rules and there was a bit of grief over that

We're talking about rides on public roads aren't we? I think that segregating rides into fast and slow ones shows a bit of a lack of respect for inexperienced / newbie riders, the law and safety etc.

If you want to organise a ride that's going to invlove speed (and more than likely law breaking and other possibly unsafe stuff (and if a noob can't handle it, it is unsafe)) ronster is on the right track, do it via pm and not publicly. That way you know exactly who's going, more than likely ridden with them before and know that they know what to expect.

To me the poll would seem more suited to organising a track day or track day groups rather than a ride on public roads.

But that's only my $0.02c (+GST)

just rate them, then people can decide if they want to attend.

1 - easy (leisurely - slow carving cruise)
2 - intermediate (cruising - at a brisk pace)
3 - experienced (quick riding-at a fast pace)
4 - advanced (only come if you want to ring it's neck)

It is not so much about the speed its where your going. Like Maquarie pass would be a 3, putty road would be a 2, blue mountains may be a 1, old road would be a 2, Wollombi may be a 1.

Even if you 1 rated rider going on a 2 cruise, no-one is going to get cranky if you hang back then catch up.
