Did you see the new home affordability articles? New homes, especially in Sydney, attract taxes and duties worth more than the land the house sits on

Does that include home loans, then it's not too bad as I have the debt of 3 or 4 people.

What on earth made you think all the politicians actually live here? They only stay here when parliament is sitting, the rest of the time they are back where they came from letting off fireworks and watching porn

Which taxes are we talking about? Income tax is the same for everyone, so it would have to be one of the many fees, stamp duties etc. that people get charged when they buy, sell and use anything...so most of the time they are paying them wherever they are living which isn't usually Canberra.

...and those sort of taxes are usually determined at a local level anyway, so it's not the Federal politicians who have a say. If the ACT got rid of them and NSW or VIC didn't, that has nothing to do with the Feds.

...sorry, I just hate the Canberra bashing when people are referring to Federal politicians...they aren't ours, they're yours. They just meet here every now and then, we don't want them

...dont' know about Synney
but in the paper at the weekend here in Melbourne
on a house/land package costing $360,000
the total tax take (inc compliance costs) was
approx $80,000

yep nearly 25% of the total is taxes

that includes stamp duty GST local govt taxes
and charges to the developers for roads water gas etc
being laid on

based on the history of the place
Canbra was a political decision..by politicians

remember..the Federal parliament met in Melbourne originally
and the politicians complained about that
and when it was suggested that Parliament move to Synney
there were more complaints
and so to decide (and I reckon in hindsight....satisfy no-one)
the politicians came up with ...Canberra

which btw
happens to be the only city in the world
that was created by and for politicians

cheers
