My advice is.
NEVER buy a new car, as soon as you drive it out of the showroom its lost one third its value.
Buy near new /40,000ks 1 year old. You'll save big $$$$$$$ & it will still be covered by new car warranty.
Let someone else do their arse on a new car, & you pick up the cream.

Secondly, If you go new, buy a Commadoor or Falcon/Territory, & keep aussie cars alive. Don't buy anything that's imported, our car industry needs help, the imports need nothing. Both Ford & Holden are offering huge discounts right now, & even better if you can find a 2012 model sitting in a yard, they will bend over to sell you a 2013 model. The company's offer huge incentives to dealers to unload their 2012 stock..
For economy . Falcon Ecoboost, http://www.ford.com.au/cars/new-falcon# ... 8978126790
Territory Diesel. http://www.ford.com.au/suv/territory#ov ... 8978979280

Hope this help, & enjoy playing word games with car salesman..

Why support supposed local when the profit goes overseas anyway. Holden (GM) have been propped up of so long now they don't know how to be efficient and it was our coin that gave them profit margin.

Falcon/ Territory and Commodore resale will be $1.50 after a couple of years due to the cease in production. Historical data will show that ceased production of anything mass produced kills the resale price as once they stop production the cars that are left are typically dumped at below cost prices which drives down the resale.

I do agree with buying a 1 year old car with low milage. Typically you should be able to save 30% off the new price with something that has 20k on clock. Don't buy it privately or from a dealer, go to the auctions and cut out the middle man. You will normally see multiples of the same or similar spec car, so plenty of choice. Don't buy the first one at auction and don't wait to buy the last unless there are a lot of the same car (20+).

Now what do you need the car for? This then determines which makes and models.

Looking kind of Mirage/Focus/Rio/Corolla/Golf type car so small'ish, you can't get Diesels (Or Falcons) for the money I want to spend! and what is wrong with wanting a new car anyway! :P

Nothing wrong with buying new or rather wanting new, only that unless you can write off the depreciation for tax purposes it can hurt a little in the back pocket if you need to sell within a couple of years

I wouldn't exclude Hyundai if you are looking new. Personally don't like them and will never buy one. However they have one of the best car warranties and the build quality is up with the better manufacturers.

A lot will say steer clear of Golf, but I have two VW's, one a GTI which I will be upgrading to the R next year when they release the new version. The build quality shits all over local and most Japanese. The issues were with the 7 speed auto and some diesel fuel injection

Some times when buying a near new one a bit cheaper than the new it pays to add up the transfer fee plus you can usually can get a capped service price for a new vehicle which makes a big difference and at times depending on the price of the second hand one , it will add up to a fair bit of dough making it viable to buy new, also remember that if its ute ,twin cab vehicle and used the car yard wont give you warranty just the remainder of the the new car warranty if still covered buy . Apparently the little Mazda 3 or 4 are a good little car from what I hear.

The Ford Fiesta ST gets a good write up in November Issue of Motor and I reckon you could get a new one at that price :)
