Coolest paint job..... Ever! *****

Postby swabio-ACT » Wed Aug 07, 2013 7:02 pm

As per the title.... but ***** = by me ;)

Well after using some incompatible paint the first time around..... and then destroying the body trying to get the paint off (I can wholeheartedly confirm that acetone and polycarbonate are a very bad mix!)

I decided to get some Tamiya Polycarbonate rattle cans for the next job ;) thought that I'd go a little more complex than the last one..... and decided on implementing an Oz flag into the design.... it was a PITA because of the crappy masking tape I have..... and unfortunately suffered a little bleeding....... (although i think it gives it that rustic / worn look ;) )

I used five colours and decided to keep it pretty simple..... the front is in a Irridescent Blue/Green (has to be backed by black) the rear is mettalic blue, union jack is metallic red, and the stars and UJ are white..... and silver was used to back the metallic paint.......

Anyway, the masking took hours....... to cut out the little stars, position them etc.... but the Union Jack was absolutely a PITA with 1 inch masking tape..... I layered it on to a used decal sheet and then cut the pattern with my hobby knife.....that was the easy bit.... getting the damn thing onto the curved body of the car without falling to bits was painstaking!

But anyway, I think the whole project turned out pretty good for a rattle can job.......

I am getting an Iwata HP-C plus airbrush and a sparmax compressor in a couple of weeks..... and have ordered a heap of faskolor paints from the states..... which will get to me via Australia ......

Wll here are some pix of the job!

When you go for the Airbrush and get into it, try this place. http://www.airbrushmegastore.com price is right and the service is good.

Don't go for a gravity feed airbrush, go for something like the Iwata HP.BCS. Cleaning a gravity feed between colours wears thin very quickly. Water based paints such as Autoair are fantastic, you can change colours in seconds and cleaning up is a breeze.

Beware, you will play a lot, so buy a ream of A3 paper and an easel. :kuda:

With fresh paint like that, you expect nothing less.

Hmmm, I like compactness of a GF brush....... I might have to give getting a second larger one that is suction fed.......I was looking at getting a second one anyway as the HP-C plus has a small needle..... 0.3mm so was thinking about getting another about .6mm to do the larger areas anyway.......

That looks very neat. I am looking for new things to paint, so if the bodies are not too expensive, ill grab a few and play.

I have the Iwata HP.CR with the .5 tip. Its a very small unit, Gravity fed and good for small jobs like helmets and RC car bodies. If your looking to do base/clear coats, i suggest getting a small spray gun like the Iwata Mini Touch up gun. I have one and find it handy. It will easily paint a full fairing set.

That looks great.. You must be confident with ya driving, we have busted most of our covers.
Spent last weekend fibreglass repairing the ones I could.. :-)
The kid tried to take a triple jump at the last race, crashed and got cleaned up by the guy behind busting the cover into pieces... to many to repair.. :-)

Got him a new car for his birthday... Pre painted... :-)
