That'll do me!

As a once avid Rugby League fan, I am finally giving up on watching State of Origin and for the first time ever, just turned off the game. Before you Queenslanders start carrying on, it has nothing to do with NSW winning or losing. I am just completely fed up with the inconsistency of the referees fucking up the game. At one time I could happily watch a game and appreciate it for the contest and quality of play and not be fazed as to who won or lost; but now, sadly, I am continually disappointed with the poor decisions that unfairly handicap one side or the other. The decision to allow the Queensland try when even the Queensland commentators were admitting it was an obstruction, was inexcusable and was the last straw.

Now I understand that referees are human and will make the odd poor call on the fly and I can live with that, but the two referee model and the video ref has just added another level of inconsistency which has evolved to the point of often being the deciding factor in far too many games. I'm quite happy for Queensland to win again if they are the better side, but it infuriates me when I see some of the unfair decisions that give NSW no chance at all to win and make it a completely unfair competition. :x (It's like watching Formula Extreme with the Yamahas getting away with breaking the rules regarding modifications. It's just no fun watching the same people win continually because they have an unfair advantage. )

End Rant. That is all.

The inconsistencies dont just go one way, however I agree with you about the level of decisions made by the so called referees!

Agreed. There were a few clangers went NSW's way in the second match in Sydney.

It's not just the big decisions either. The speed of the play the ball is imperative to a team attacking well and the ref is in complete control of that factor. Sadly when they switch from one ref to the other, the each have different interpretations as to how long a team can hold players down for and one team usually gets an unfair advantage. That in itself is enough to fatigue one side more than the other and make it nearly impossible to overcome and win. It's usually the home side or the favourite that gets the play the ball advantage too, making it harder for the underdog to get the win.

It just pisses me off that the most important person on the field isn't a player or coach these days, but is the narcosis with the whistle.

Full disclosure - don't really care about rugby all too much watch it on occasions but didn't see tonight's game..........

But can totally hear you regarding refs, unfortunately it's the same across the board in every sport, I play basketball, not in the highest level in my area which is championship but "A" grade men's open, I've played championship and it's exactly the same.... But we can have refs that are ex NBL or SEABL which are obviously some of the highest in Aus and the inconsistency is just out of control. I've got to the point where I have to consciously tell myself this is just cause you enjoy playing ball not because it's important or else I find I go home to the missus and kids angry.
Sometimes it's at the point that we look at the team we are playing against and almost at the same time we/they say to each other we would be better off reffing each other........

I enjoy AFL a lot being from Vic and it's similar to what your saying nelso, but I suppose it's a little easier to swallow when games are quite high scoring so you have opportunity to make up for the bad call. Taking away all the games that are decided by a kick mind you...........lol

It's just super frustrating and I suppose you just have to remember its entertainment and not life or death.

Exactly right..... Inconsistent Referee decisions is the reason I pulled out of the work Footy tipping comp two years ago. I haven't been to a game or watched a game on TV either, except for State of Origin. I'll keep watching State of Origin with the hope that NSW will eventually win a series.

I feel your pain Nelso, as a 40 something NSWelshman I can remember when scrums were almost a fair contest, when a tackle was complete when a player was on the ground, hell I even remember fullback kicking duels.

I vented my spleen to the NRL a few years ago via their website, but they probably dismissed it because their "product" was appealing to more and more people at the time.

I still remember Willie Mason on the footy show responding to a question whether he'd chase the big bucks at Rugby Union with "I don't know the rules mate".

I can't give it away though because my Dragons are still my Dragons and while they still wear the Red V I'll keep watching. I just have to resign myself to the fact that the game will continue to change to keep pace with their market research, the fact that it's all run like a business these days, and that if I want to go and watch a real scrum with pushing and hooking I'll have to watch a game of rah rah. Etc. etc.
